The tag that shows the 6/97 build date on the door jam should also have a VIN, you say that matches the one on the dash?

Yep all the vin #'s match. Correction on the manufacture date though 8/97 (not that it matters).

95ram I think your right i used the vin decoder and this truck was sold as a club cab. The 7th digit is the # 2, according to this

http://dodgeram.org/tech/specs/VIN_decode.htm

its a club cab. 98 club cab, not really the holy grail but harder to fined. Look for me on Barrett Jackson.

If a total cab r/r took place the door vin will match the dash vin, but that should show up in the registration.

My truck has the vin laser etched in the passenger framerail under the door facing the ground. Found it by accident. there are probably a couple other places it is engraved too but I haven't seen any.

Has it been wrecked or modified. Seems like a lot of work to convert to the newer dash but I am sure someone has probably done it. There are also a lot of mystery trucks in between model years running around out there with changeover parts. Like the few quad cab 12 valvers and some 99 and 2000's with rear discs.
I'm with you there. A couple years ago as I was truck shopping I came across a really nice shape Red 2001 Dodge 1500 sport...CLUB CAB. I have seen a '99 club cab before but I was really stumped when I saw this truck. Has anyone ever heard of this?? It was like the twilight zone

I've had a 98 club cab short box 4x4 12valve and a 98 quad cab short box 4x4 12valve. Seen a 98 24v club cab short box 4x4 once... weird truck

Canopy is what some folks call a topper, shell or probably some other things I don't know.
No idea why but if you have one on the truck registration is much cheaper in CA.

A truck is a truck here in CA. Camper shell or not, it's a commercial vehicle and registration is no different. Even little Toyota trucks are considered commercial vehicles because they are trucks. 1/2-, 3/4- or 1-ton designation doesn't matter either.

And mechanical engine or not, '98 and new trucks get smogged, period.

Not so and I wish I could tell you exactly why I had a 85 Ford diesel wannabe that had a nice painted to match bed COVER. I bought it that way and it was registered Non-Commercial, I drove the thing for two years with no issues until a possibly bored CHP officer pulled me over for being improperly registered. He said that to be registered Non-Comm I must have a CAMPER (key word?) Shell (canopy) that people can be inside of.....? But as far as I know it IS illegal to have folks inside said Camper Shell while driving Anyway up here in Shasta County your rig Can be registered non-comm with at least a cab high shell on it but don't let the boys in blue catch ya hauling much in the bed. Tim

You know what, I do recall that now. My dad went through the same deal with his '86 F-350. He had a cab-height camper shell for it but it was never on all the time. We had a gooseneck trailer that we pulled every once in a while. When he was told about the non-commercial registration, it was specified to him that if it were registered as non-commercial with the camper shell on, the truck was essentially illegal to drive without it. And he was also told that if he were to be pulled over and have ANYTHING in the bed, even a small bag of groceries (yes, groceries!), he would face fines. That's good ol' Commie-fornia for ya.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever herd. If the fine is low enough does it make sense to register the truck as non-commercial?

There are no low fines in Kalifornia, if it wasn't for my love of warm weather and a job I've had and enjoyed for nearly 20 yrs I'd be outta here. As for registering Comm or Non Comm.....well that depends how much you use the bed and how much you Enjoy Your hard earned cash in Your hand and not the states.

Its pretty easy for the Boys in blue to spot a comm and non comm plate all comm plates will only have one letter in them were as non comm hence RV will have three letters. Now for personalzed plates I'm not sure.

Yep. That single letter is always in the 2nd digit position on a commercial plate. My dad has a personalized plate on his '06 MegaCab. No numbers at all.
