Loved my Jeep, but gave it up to by a 94 12 v.
I bought a 12 valve with 161,000 miles, and knew the truck since the previous owner had bought it. That is definitely a plus- if you know what your are looking for, any model will have its pluses and minuses. Know your stuff, and find a truck in your price range that has a history you can find out. In lots of cases, those typical problems may already be worked out. I knew the history of mine, the trans had just been rebuilt, and I got it for $6000. It may not be perfect, but I know I will get my moneys worth out of it. Good luck looking, and have fun with it!

12 Valve - the reports here are not inflated - there are real issues that have to be dealt with. At this point, the bigger concern is the rest of the truck - like ball joints, radiators, steering boxes, broken leaf spring hangers, rust issues (in Illinois) and electrical gremlins. Mine is solid electrically, but I've had most of the other things occur. You can find a good one for under $7k if you travel to buy the right one.

Buy the best maintained truck that you can find and afford. On the 24, you need gauges and upgraded fuel system. Then you MAY (probably) need to do something about the steering. I tried to do it once so bought the parts in my sig. The steering box still has play from 11:30 to 1:30 which I hope is an adjustment. Now why a fancy expensive new aftermarket AGR box needs to be adjusted has yet to be determined. Perhaps PPQC?? Anyhow, these trucks aren't cheap.

OK so am I thinking right about this or not...
Would it be safer to get a '01-'02 24V vs. a '98.5-00 24V considering the fuel systems?
I know the 5spd trannys tend to lose 5th gear, but any problems with the '02 6spd manual tranny's?

98.5 to 02 fuel systems will be the same. Count on upgrading your fuel pump.
5 speeds can loose 5th gear (There are fixes, but they require a rebuild)
NV5600 are not bad, but parts are getting very expensive and hard to find.

5 speeds do not typically fail catastrophically, 5600's do so more frequently it seems. 5th gear dropping off doesn't harm anything, just slows you down a bit. Unless you are towing, I would stick to the 4500.
I would also reccomend to keep looking for a 12v. Having had both of them, its a no brainer to which one is easier to work on and more reliable.

some trucks had the intank fuel pump mod done which in my opinion was a step backwards
if you get a 24v, save 1000$ for future VP replacement, you might get lucky, but if not your prepared

The same applies to fuel system & steering. $2000 is what I have ball parked in my mind. DSS brace, Track bar, bar bracket, Steering box, steering pump, AirDog. Tires are $650. VP is $1000+. Now diff is leaking & dash has cracked. 50,000 mi trucks around 500,000 mi engines. Of course, you could destroke a Ferd. The kit is $5,000 + engine, trans, upgrades & install.
