Why ppump rather than engine swap?
Why ppump rather than engine swap?
Like it says, why are you 24V guys going through the expensive hassle of a ppump swap rather than putting in an entire running 12v motor? Is it to keep the 24v head? Maybe built motors you don’t want to lose? It seems like it’d be cheaper to do an engine swap, and wouldn’t take much longer. You gotta pull the front clip to swap the cam anyways, right?
Some sensors that don’t jive with the 24v electronics maybe?
I only ask because I WILL be going ppump someday because I’ll never sell this truck, but I’d rather just swap a motor personally. Especially since I can get the ball rolling early, get the motor how I want it, etc… and then just drop it in.

I'd like to know the right answer for this too. I just sold my '96 12v and bought an '02 24 valve and truly wish I had not. Granted the '96 was wore slap out and butt ugly and the '02 is super clean and tight, but I had VP issues before I could get it off the lot. Fighting with the dealer now to try and get them to replace the VP, we'll see how it goes. The '96 had 340,000 hard, hard miles towing a 32' gooseneck and ran flawless. The '02 drives great and looks sharp but it's a turd. After seeing what my '96 could do, three close friends bought Dodge CTD's, including one who had only had his new Hemi truck for 4 months. He tows a fifth wheel travel trailer all the time, and can't believe the difference. He is definitely a CTD convert. If they had seen my '02 they would have just bought gassers.
I really miss my 12v. I know it would go another 340,000 miles with no problems at all. I'm not sure my 24v will get me to work tomorrow. Fass, Walbro, Airdog, Airtex, Carter, bypass, dual pumps, this is all foreign language to a 12 valver. The 12v was extremely responsive, the 24v feels like the pedal is connected with a bungee cord.
I went back to the dealer today with the idea of buying back my old truck and putting the high mileage motor in my '02. Of course he sold it yesterday after sitting on the lot only 4 days. So how much of a problem is it to P-pump a 24v? If I am doomed to buying multiple lift pumps and injection pumps for the life of my truck, wouldn't it be better to go ahead and fix the problem once and for all? What are the pros and cons of a conversion?

I think doing the p-pump conversion overall would be less work than an engine swap, mainly because of the wiring involved to get the instrumentation right. With my truck, I unplugged the VP, the APPS, and thats it. With the 12v, you'll want that ECM and PCM so the gauges will work right, and the grid heaters will work properly. Getting a spare engine is a significant investment. I stockpiled parts for 6 months before I did my swap, so I wasn't dropping big amounts of coin at once. On the flip side, you could sell a low mileage 24v engine for the same price or more than the 12v you picked up. Different strokes for different folks.
