Why is my '01 24V smoking more every day?
Why is my '01 24V smoking more every day? *Update*
I bought the truck with 56K miles in Dec. 2002 and it now has 89K miles. I've noticed that it seems sluggish and it smokes much more now than it did when I bought it. I am referring two 2nd and 3rd gear pulls at low rpm.
It is stock as far as I know, I have not pulled an injector to see if the previous owner may have installed 275 injectors but it is possible.
I have checked the intercooler hoses but not recently and temporarily removed the air filter to see if that made a difference.
What else should I look for?

It has been about a year but the last time I checked the intercooler hoses and lift pump pressure they were fine. I can't tell you the exact pressure though.
Can I extract the codes without a scan tool?

Ya. Just turn the key on/off three times and leave it on the third time and you should see the codes come up in the odometer screen. I'd check the intercooler boots. Smoke means not enough air to burn all the fuel being injected.
No codes, I believe it first displayed P ECU and then PCU DONE.
The lift pump pressure is 13 psi when bumping the switch and 12 psi at idle. I believe the port at the back of the filter housing yields actual lift pump pressure, correct?
I will check cruise and WOT lift pump pressure later tonight.
What is the best method for checking the boots?

there are no mods listed in your sig so assuming that you do not have a box malfunctioning? also assuming that the smoke you are talking about is black smoke indicating an overfueling condition. White or gray smoke is a different problem all together.possibly the good news here is that if you have no mods chances are this problem will be covered under warranty.

That's what I would check first. Sounds like you've ruled out a bunch.

2. weak VP (how do I determine if the pump is weak?)
3. dirty IAT sensor (will clean this morning and check lift pump pressure at WOT)
4. MAP (is this a replace or reset sensor?)
5. leaky injector (I think this is a real possibility, on this truck)
6. I will check these today

where are you at in H-Town? I work in Sugarland.
Hey Rusty, the truck hasn't had a bath in a long while, I'll degrease the front end and take it to the carwash. There is no filter in the box temporarily.
kid...I checked for cuts in the boots and tightened all of them, the passenger side lower required quite a few turns on the nut. No but I'm not completely sure they are
Pressure into the fuel filter is 14 psi idle, 12 psi cruising and 9 psi at WOT. I will go back out this morning and move the test guage to the pump.
