Whining noise on acceleration

I have a 2002 Ram 2500 24v Cummins and lately I've been noticing that when I accelerate the motor makes a whining noise coming from the drivers side. I checked all around for boost leaks and couldn't find any. What else could cause this?

Do you have the radio on at the time? If so it could be alternator whine caused by a poor ground or a bad alternator.

Does it sounds electrical or mechanical? Depending on how it sounds it could even be coolant rushing through the heater core.....

It sounds spinning and mechanical but the alternator could Definately be it I'll have to take a look at that when I wake up

A mechanics stethoscope or appropriate piece of wood/dowel will help you track down a noisy accessory.

My uncle who was a mechanic his whole life made a sort of stethoscope with a piece of steel rod and an ear piece from one of those old candle stick phones. I used it one time and you didn't have to have your ear right on that thing. Of course this was way back when those old phones were plentiful still. He was actually AJ Foyt's mechanic when he started racing at a place called Playland Park in Houston. Now that was a looong time ago.
He also made his own jack stands from a couple of Model-T rear axle housings. Pretty creative he was.

So ive narrowed it down to either a vacuum leak or a boost leak I just cant find either. I had a master dodge tech look at it and he agreed its one of the two

Did y'all check under the driver side battery? There's a 'gizmo' (Name slips my mind) under there that has a vacuum line going to it. Mine snapped off years ago and my ABS and cruise quit working. I Liked the no ABS so I just taped the leak and got used to the lights on the cluster. I don't recall it making a whining sound though.

I would suppose you have a standard transmission, otherwise you can power brake it and listen for the whine/whistle.

Cruise Control Servo, and yes, it is a common problem for the line to be rotted away.

That's exactly what mine did and the truck was only maybe 3 years old when it popped driving in from Livingston, Tx to Humble. I do miss the cruise but I don't miss stopping in the middle of the intersection, especially when there's a cop sitting at the light looking at me. He evidently knew exactly what happened because he just grinned at me before I drove on. Now everybody knows I'm panic stopping by the way the rear duals scream as I'm sliding in sideways. LOL
