What if I don't want to be loud?
What if I don't want to be loud?
There I was driving down the road minding my own business when the metal grinding noise started. My wife and I looked at each other and she said, "Whatever it is, I hope it’s not expensive." After finding a safe place to pull over, I walked slowly to the back of the truck. I had my fingers crossed hoping to find a deer wearing steel toe boots caught up in the under carriage. Instead, I found my exhaust pipe hanging off the axle onto the road.
Here's the problem, I don't want a loud replacement. I want something just as quite as the stock exhaust. Why is that so impossible to find? Clearly, I'm an odd-ball from all the threads I have read in which the vast majority believe louder is better.
Is there anyplace on the web (or Southern Maryland) that sells plain old (quite) exhaust systems.

take it to your local muffler/exhaust shop. they should be able to use your stock muffler and run you a new exhaust for $100-$200. if muffler is no good i am sure they can get a stock type replacement.
FWIW, my MBRP is very quiet on the outside. I can stand by the pipe and have a hard time hearing it over the engine. It does have a drone to it. I honestly can't remember what my stock exhaust sounded like inside.
is there any way to get a quiet 4" exhaust? if it exists? i want to take my truck hunting but right now its too loud, itll scare everything away. dont want to lose the advantage the bigger exhaust gives me. quite a conumdrum, any help would be welcome.
Funny.. Mine has a 4 inch Magna flow with the straight flow muffler, and mine is no louder than the stock was, especially when standing by the tail pipe the freaking engine makes more noise than comes out the tail pipe. the exhaust is slightly louder when under load, but you likely would not even notice the difference from the stock exhaust. From inside the cab it is no louder than before. I have no idea if its louder from the outside, at least my neighbours have not said anything to me, and they would if it was too loud.

a buddy of mine suggested doubling up my mufflers, or maybe resinator cans. the straight through sounds like it might work. i have a 2000 ford half ton that is ignored by most animals, i want to achieve this level of quiet with one of my dodges.
You can install a large performance exhaust and still have it dead quiet if properly done.
The trick is that you'll actually want to install multiple mufflers to break up standing waves. So two shorter mufflers inline is what you want-- not one big straight-through muffler.
Plumb a high-flow resonator into your exhaust before the main muffler. Try one of these:

You can see they have both 4" and 5" versions.
Couple the appropriate size resonator (or two!) with a straight-through muffler and you will have a system that give you all the flow advantages of a high-performance aftermarket exhaust, but none of the noise.

You might be able to get to that level with the exhaust, but your engine will still scare them away. But thats a good thing, less likely to hit bambi.
If you want a stealthy CTD, trade in for a HPCR.
Other than that, you can make a CTD much quieter with some concerted effort placed into sound deadening.
You need to contact Greg (LSFarm on TDR) as he's the self-proclaimed "noise ****" and has perhaps the most extensive sound deadening of any 2nd gen CTD on the road.
