What happens when you overpower the stock slushbox?

I'd really like to have an auto, but the price for upgrading is pretty hefty. About how much power increase (hp/torque) can an 00' auto take over stock? What happens if you go past that ammount, do the tranny puke, or does it just start slipping? I'm really interested in knowning, thanks.

The autos are pretty tough if you treat them carefully. I got over 200,000 miles on mine before it started to puke.

If you keep the revs up, don't let it slip when towing in OD, and don't slip it with too much go pedal off the line, I think that you should last a long time with care. After all, it is not the power, but the abuse of the power that wrecks the tranny.
PS...boost the line pressure a bit.
george

Well, it might be hard not to get on the go pedal
I went for a ride in Merrick's truck down here in Laredo. He's been helping me alot, great guy. His truck is just.. fast. ****. Every single vehicle I've owned has been standard, and it's starting to get old. I guess I shouldn't have driven my mom's truck.. **** auto spoiled me. I would like to take it down to the track every now and then, wanted to pick up a PE Comp Drag, and put a single stack. I haven't bought the truck yet, I'm still debating wether or not to go slushbox or stick. The more I think about it, the more I want auto.. I've been told about 60hp over stock will kill an auto tranny, but didn't specify what "kill" is. Maybe someone will take an 01 Ford Ranger in exchange for a bomb-proof slushbox

HOW DO YOU BOOST THE LINE PRESSURE MENTIONED BY GEORGE. I'M ALSO NOT QUITE READY TO BOMB-PROOF
THE TRANNY DUE TO EXPENSE. QUESTION IS...WHEN BAD
SLIPPAGE OCCURS...IS IT NORMALLY A BAND OR CLUTCHES
THAT IS THE WEAK POINT THAT GIVES UP AND IS THERE
A GOOD BREAK-DOWN AVAILABLE ON SITE FOR RE-BUILD.
YEARS A GO 1969 I A 727 APART REPLACING REAR BAND.
THAT WORKED OUT GOOD. IT LASTED A LONG TIME AFTERWARDS. SO IF WE GET ONE SLIPPING CAN WE GET BY
REPLACING THE BANDS AND CLEANING IT UP??? ANY AND ALL
INFO WOULD BE APPRECIATED. WAYNE

Normally, it is the torque converter that lets go first. It is barely adequate for stock power. I had a comp on mine and started slipping it after running it on 3x3. You can run the comp on 1x3 or even 2x3 and be fine. If you don't tow heavily. The tranny wont puke it's guts. Only the TC will start slipping.

I had a 2000 automatic 3500 4x4. If you bomb and don't upgrade the auto to match you are going to spend some big $$$ to fix it.

Well I did not upgrade my tranny before I bombed the engine.
The TC was thrash and the rest of the tranny needed more than a bit of attention. I think that the whole tranny should be overhauled.
If you have some small troubles now and mount a better TC and bomb you will put much more torque into the tranny.

AlpineRAM

Re:What happens when you overpower the stock slushbox?

Mine is being beefed up this week, I have had no problems with it. It is expensive whether you drive it in to a shop or have it towed in (more expensive towed in). The question is do you want to make the appointment on your own time or break down @ 11pm on a saturday night 150 miles from nowhere and be on a waiting list because the trans shop is backed up with work 3 weeks.
I agonized over dishing out the money too but decided if I wanted my truck to do what I modified it for this was a must.
According to Scott@ Massdiesel (he is doing my trans) typically the TC's start slipping first. I was just @ his shop yesterday for a wrench day and he's got piles of broken tranny parts of all kinds.
Tim
