what causes shifter play??

when my truck is in gear i can move the shifter a good bit back and forth, maybe close to an inch total travel.

is this caused in the shift linkage down in the the top of the tranny, or could it be in the BD short throw pivot point that bolts to the top of the tranny. its never caused any problems, just a problem that bothers me becuase i know while in gear my shifter should not be able to move that much

I am just guessing, but I would think that it would be the linkage. It would be worth a look.

Mine moves about the same. when you look at the end of the shaft down by the tranny there is not much room for movement but once you extend that all the way up the shifter it turns into a fair bit. after time it will wear a bit and get even more. if you ever drive a 97-93 dodge with a 5spd they have a lot of movement in the shifter. beffore I got my new tranny in my 94 it would even rotate about 1/2"
