Waste gate stuck closed again!!!

Am I the only one that has this problem?? I've replaced the turbo on this 2001 2500 truck twice because of a stuck closed waste gate. It really pisses me off that the waste gate is part of the turbo and not replaceable as a separate unit. I had 75,000 miles on the first stock turbo and 3,000 on the second turbo but it had been on the truck for over a year so no warranty!! I had a diesel truck center remove it about 3,000 miles ago and after heating it up with a torch I think and working it they freed it up. Now it's stuck closed again. I know it's the waste gate because when I pull my little single axle snowmobile trailer you would think I was towing 20,000 lbs when I get to a hill. The rpm's drop and with the pedal to the floor the tranny downshifts and the best I can get out of it is 62 MPH. SOMEBODY must have a fix for this ongoing problem? Ohh..I have also replaced the fuel pump in the tank twice and the VP44 at 50,000. The second fuel pump 3,000 miles ago. I currently have only 88,000 miles on the truck. I use it a lot can you tell? A duramax is looking better every day!

Sounds like its stuck open, not closed. Closed is normal operation. Did you replace it with another HY35? I'd say find another used HX35 and swap on. Wire it shut if you have to.

Not on a stock trans though! :P Besides the hy will support about 100hp over stock with J-hook and boost fooler, and the hx will support about 150 over stock with a "boost elbow" and boost fooler. 1psi increase=appx enough boost to support 10more hp. The hy35 hits choke point around 32psi and the hx hits it around 35psi. And up to that point the smaller turbos will outperform larger, more sluggish turbos. With the exception of some smaller ballbearing turbos.

A wastegate problem doesn't sound right at all. Wastegates are pretty reliable units. And they are pretty much the same device on the Duramax's until they went to less reliable variable displacement turbos that DID get stuck.

I would bet it's not a turbo issue at all. Check your engine codes. And be aware that it takes SERIOUS force to open the waste gate by hand. I'd be looking for preturbo exhaust leaks (OE manifold is NOTORIOUS for cracking) and boost leaks if you don't have any codes.

Codes

OK, checked the codes as follows;

P0500
P1693

P1693
P0234

"P0234" = I'm thinking the Waste gate is stuck closed again? Could I just leave it that way and install a "Boost Fooler" or is that asking for trouble?

I'm also thinking about buying and installing a "Juice with attitude CTS" , will this help this problem?

Had same problem on 01 at work. I think people were pulling to hard and warped something in turbo. Mabe too high of EGT. went thru 2 turbos, now on 3rd one from the junk yard and no problems. we dont pull with the truck much anymore. not sure what exactly caused first two to go.
We were getting over boost code or something and it would go into limp mode or something. its been 3-4 yrs ago. cannot remember all the details.

My 2001 is stuck closed for 4 years now. I had the same problem I use vise grips and KP53 on it for a month trying to free it up would last a week or two. I installed a Quad xzt (boost fooler included) and the problem solved. My friend fixed his by tearing down the turbo and machined the bushing in the waste gate location problem fix. But he has a turn buckle on it now because he installed a chip. Plus the truck are gutless without a chip towing trust me 10,000 lb fifth wheel and going 40mph up hills does not work. The chip makes the truck just right not great but will hold the hills but still shifts down to 3rd. Anything else will make you do the transmission.

Is the gate closed at 0 engine rpm? If it is stuck closed am I correct in saying you get full boost? Also if stuck and when pulling away hard and the engine goes flat at about 2000 rpm is it de-fueling? I think mine is stuck closed because my father-in-law had the truck for 4 years and trust me the gate would have never opened because he never pulled or drove it faster than 55mph and took all day to get there.

Old 300, I believe you are correct. With the Wastegate "Closed" there is no way to control the boost so you end up with code P0234 wich is overboost and puts the truck in "limp" mode and defuels it at 2200 RPM. I sound like your Father-in-law? LOL The key with these trucks is you NEED gages!!! I just bought the Edge Juice with Attitude CTS. Hopefully this will correct my problem. It has a built in Boost Fooler so the wastegate stuck is no longer a problem....I Hope?

NEW Truck

WOW! I decided to install an Edge Juice with Attitude CTS. It certainly fixed the stuck waste gate problem and then some! I finally have my old truck back and it's better then it was NEW! I highly recommend this product even for everyday or once in awhile drivers. This is my CTS as I was driving down the interstate at 68 MPH.
