Waste gate

I did a little looking but thought I would ask the question. I think my waste gate is stuck closed and is there any way of getting it freed up. My truck has never been worked or pushed except once I pulled away rather fast and made a bit of black smoke. I read the codes the other day and had one for over boost. I figure where I don't work it its not likely an issue but would like to know if once they stick are they done. I know there is a hose going to an actuator, is it vacuum or pressure? Any ideas?

you may be able to free it up, wd40 or some good penatrating fluild sprayed on it every day when its hot and cold might do it. You can check your waste gate by putting regulated air presure to it should open at about 23psi i think, maybe someone else know that number better than me. But an overboost code can occur on a stock engine, my truck set them lots when it was stock.

You have the HY-35 turbo.. Most I ever saw out of mine was 21 lbs with and EZ and towing up a hill. other wise 19-20 is all I could get out of mine.

Give the WD40 a try, Im not sure if you can replace Just the actuator on that turbo, because of the small metal tube that bleads out excess air.
Not sure if you can detach that easily if at all.

if your wastegate is stuck closed, and over boosting then you should feel the truck loose power as the ECM/PCM defuels the truck
clear the codes and see if it comes back if it does it could be a wastegate or boost sensor issue

Hey nickg, I was thinking back to the day I gave it a good push up an on ramp pulling with another pick-up. Come to think of it the truck was pulling hard and then at about 2400-2500 rpm it just fell of like I took my foot out of it. Sounds like what your saying. Thanks everyone..

Want a wastegate?

I have the OEM wastegate that I removed when I installed a Banks kit from my 2001.5 way back when. It is from a HO engine, but the price is right.

The thing is "Does it hurt to be stuck closed". Like I Said its never worked or pulled. Probally doesn't make too much boost anyway.

what happens if it is stuck open? When I bough the truck someone had used a spring clamp to pinch the rubber hose going to it... I removed it the other day... I seem to have some white smoke at idle and black smoke under almost any throttle.. I was thinking a few things... stuck open wastegate.. bad injector(s).. or bad fuel... I checked the rubber boost hoses from the turbo to the intake horn and none of them have cracks or holes or are blown off... any help... I'm smokeing like crazy and it is not good
