vp44 toast?
vp44 toast?
We were chasing some calves around town the other day (I won't get into the story of how that came to be, but will add that a town cop didn't help any by driving down over the hill where they were hiding to get a better look at them) when the boss's 2000 quit. Just shut off going down the road. Looked it over, but it doesn't seem to be fueling (system is primed). Coming up on about 90,000 miles, seems from what I have found on here that these pumps are pretty erratic on longevity.
Get the codes read.
Then try this.
Loosen all the injector lines that you can get to. #2 is tough, leave it alone.
Now crank it for 5-10 seconds. Now, go see if all the lines are wet at the loose fittings at the head. ( that is where you need to loosen them, not at the pump)
If they all are wet/dripping tighten them and see if it will start. You just let air out and this will help it start.
If not all are wet/dripping then it is a good bet the pump gave up or seezed and is done.
What fuel pressure does it have and did have when it was running? you do have a fuel pressure gauge on it right? All VP motors must have one!!!
Then try this.

Not a clue, I was hauling a load of calves back to pasture when it got looked at. Forgot to have them see if it would give any codes, but the check engine light is NOT on. Seems like if this pump toasted itself it should have thrown a code.
There was a lot of fuel coming out of the injector lines when it was cranked. We know how to bleed injector lines, one of us used to work for Cat and Case, and we all grew up around cantankerous old diesels. This 00 is just a little different set-up than we've been around.
The guys at the dealer said it sounded like a FSS, but do these trucks have one? The guy who worked at Cat couldn't find one, but he didn't pull that big stupid plastic cover off the pump, either.
The dealer has it, the pump's fried. Had a code but didn't kick the check engine light. They didn't even know if it can be rebuilt or if it needs replaced. I don't either, but I have never been around this pump before.
