VP44 replacment R&R
I just pulled my first VP-44 a couple nights ago. Not too big a deal. Any 'T' style puller will work to pull the pump gear loose of the pump, and two of the intake horn bolts are a good length to use with the puller. I've had my VE on and off a few times..the VP is a little more involved, but I got her done in about an hour.

I am wondering what size the gear is?
Thanks Bob

Mine looks like this one:

and worked fine on the timing gear, just make sure you pick up a couple of 8-1.25X70mm bolts from the home store first.
I don't like using bolts for one thing for something else.
And a 3/4" crowfoot socket will make getting that number 6 injector line loosened up a lot easier.
don't ask me how I know this

Thanks guys,
One last question, do you separate the gear from the shaft with the pump in place, and leave the gear in the timing gear case? or does the gear come out and get re-indeded? It seams like there is not enough room for clearence for the puller.
Anyone got a link for that cool blue chip puller?
Thanks Bob

Hey Doug,
Thanks for the offer! Fortunatly I am not replacing my pump at this time. I did replace my fourth lift pump last week, and am now afraid I may have problems with the IP. But, so far so good. I figured if I needed a special puller I could get it in advance, so as to be prepared!
Thanks Bob

The bolts holding the pump from the rear (4 on the pump and 2 on the lower bracket) are removed, then the breather unscrews from the front of the timing cover to provide access to the nut on the pump shaft.
The timing gear stays in the timing cover and the pump is removed to the rear, making sure that the gear and the woodruff key are in the 12:00 position to keep it from possibly falling into the timing case.
About a 4-5 hour job for me start to finish.
(with lots of good know-how and advice from members of this site in the process)
