Front & Rear Main Seal Replacment???
I was wondering how hard it would be to change my front and rear main seal on my 2nd gen 24 valve? The motor only has 15,000 miles on it and have developed a leak on both seals! I have no idea on how and why both are leaking but I want to fix them because I love the truck and I hate oil leaks!!! Any tips would be very helpful....
I have done the front seal and it was fairly easy. I just pulled the timing cover off and did it on the bench. The most time comsuming part is pulling all the accsesories off the front of the motor. Over all the front seal is not hard at all.
Rear seal, you'll need to pull your tranny, clutch and flywheel off. At this point, you've got two choices. Pull the seal while in place. Drill two small holes into the steel ring in the seal, install to small self-tapping screws, and pry it out, and put the new one in. Or, as I did, remove the starter, then the bellhousing adapter, and pull the seal housing off the truck, and work on it on the bench. Eitherway, remember to keep the plastic ring inside the seal until you have it over the crank, and keep it dry. I kept it dry, but screwed up with the plastic ring, and now it leaks worse than it did before.
Hey Tate, you feel like changing both seals? I don't have the tools to fix both seals. I don't want this guy here to do anymore work to my truck. $9700.00 to have both front and rear main leak, what a terrible deal!!! This guy rebuilt my engine but won't warranty it due to my HRVP44 and my Edge Comp... I have no idea what these 2 parts have to do with leaking seals but if he's going to be that hard to work with, I wan't nothing to do with him!!!
