Front seal replacment (engine)
Front seal replacment (engine)
Does any body have the part # for the front seal saver kit? And where's the best place to get it.
Also what all has to come off to replace the seal and do the KDP? I'm sure I can figure it out but experience goes a long way.

You have to drain coolant, remove belt, remove radiator from out the top,& fan Shroud. Undolt dampner, for the fan either get the big special wrench or take a sharp flat chisel, and a good hammer and smack the large fan nut Clockwise threads are Lefthanded. (make the chisel dig into the nut's edge) and the fan should come loose. Repeat procedure for the reinstall. Then the front covers right there take off. Fix KDP, install new FC seal in from back side of the cover. Apply plenty of RTV to outer cover and reinstall.

You can buy a "Dowel Pin Fix Kit" from TST Products Inc. that includes a new front seal along with a tab for the pin and a good set of instructions on how to do the job. Also has a tube of sealant for the cover.About $50.
You can get the seal from Cummins, it's in the $40 range. Comes with everything you need to install it. They also have KDP tab kits as well... at least the Boise store does.
You don't need to remove the radiator to tab the pin. You'll need to drain some antifreeze out though, so you can disconnect the top hose to get the fan and shroud off.

I don't remove the rad, shroud or the upper hose just the oil fill tube and fan hub and damper and front cover and fan it takes about an hr and 1/2 to do the job. I also have tab kits in stock.
I also left everything in place on the 12Vs I did- it's a small PIA to remove the whole fan holder in one piece, you'll need to loosen the one bolt under the pulley with not much room to work- other than that pretty easy.
I prefer to install the cover first and then drive in the seal- this makes it easier to handle the cover up there and not smear the RTV and have leaks afterwards.

I've never touched the radiator, upper hose, shroud, washer or coolant bottle. In fact the fan will come out without removing anything else at all.
After you thread the fan off, clockwise, straddle the oil fill inbetween two blades and rotate the fan, it will come right out.
