VP44 pressure

i'm reading 7-8 pounds at idle. was normally at 15.

i had a failed pusher pump that left me stranded on highway. Since, i've removed that pump, truck now starts and drives. pressure is still 7-8 pounds.

what is the suggested fix? i hear there is an internal pump in tank? VP44 is not necessarily garbage yet.

what is the next low buck fix first?

thanks

there is no in tank pump for a 2001, unless it was installed later. there is a pump within the vp44, but just using the vp44 to suck fuel will kill it asap.

not really, i ran for over 20,000 miles with a bad lift pump.....the vp44 sucked fuel thru it . the only thing i noticed was a stumble on acceleration

Still, vp wasn't designed to provide its own fuel....requires supply.

You need/want/should get a new lift pump asap. 15 lbs is way higher than stock lift pumps (usually see 8-12 psi).

If you had an in tank it would not have the engine block mounted pump and a relay and wiring to the in tank unit.

$600 for a FASS or AIRDOG is a lot cheaper and easier to add than r/r a vp at $1500 just for the part!!

i had a "pusher pump" installed along frame rail as an aid to VP44. This added between fuel tank and VP44. this is what i took out of the sequence.
my question, is there yet another pump somewhere else?
as you can see, the topic of the "in tank" pump, or "no other pump" issue popped up already.
does anyone know for sure?
thanks

the oem pump is on the side of the engine behind the fuel filter

Dodge came out with a factory fix for the stock cummins lift pump. They installed a intank fuel pump, similar to the new trucks.

I run 28-50psi of fuel pressure on my VP. I'm using a stock fuel pick-up (no intank fuel pump), a walbro 392, a adjustable efi fuel reg.

If you want the best lift cheap skate pump fix for VP trucks, is to install a factory cummins VE lift pump or P7100 lift pump. To do this you need to install a 12V camshaft (or aftermarket camshaft) and reinstall the VP cam gear. The VE lift pump is around 26psi and the P7100 is around 40psi of fuel pressure. They work pretty good and have enough fuel supply for 500rwhp.

I would suggest not worrying about it..
do you have or have you installed a fuel pressure gauge..this is critical!!!

now why I say to not worry about it...
I have run mine many time at less pressure..well think vacuum actually..yes vacuum..my pressure gauge reads both..and I have seen 10 inches vacuum many times..while not for long..think panic and STOP NOW!!!
but all this was 10K miles ago and all is running fine..at least I think so..

just my 2 cents

There are many reasons why the VP can fail which I wont go into but the number one reason is low fuel pressure because the only thing cooling the VP is the excess fuel passing through it over and beyond what the engine uses.

As mentioned, its your choice how far you want to go addressing your fuel pressure situation but just because guys have gotten away with running low to no pressure for a few thousand miles.....I wouldn't think I'd see anyone suggest not bothering.

Plus if 15 psi was "normal" but now you're reading half that pressure, you may want to understand why thats the case.
