Vp44 key in gear question

Hey guys, I'm working on removing everything so that I can replace my tappet cover gasket. Anyway I'm at the vp44 removal, just took the 1-1/16 nut and washer off, I rotated the engine to TDC but as I'm looking at the gear I don't see a key.

Am i supose to be able to see the key from here?

Should i be able to see the key with a mirror? Or will i only see it once i remove the pump?

Thanks for the help.

Never mind, I see the key in the picture now that I look closer. You can delete this post. 😒

Got it out, now I see this large rotted insulation between the computer and tappet cover. How important is it to have? It just all crumbled apart as I touched it.

It's just a heat shield material... not sure if I had a replacment in my head gasket kit for that....

THe FSM may have something on it, I'll look when I get home tonight.
