Removing inj. pump question

Guys help an old diesel mechanic with poor eyesight out here. I have my pump ready to pull the gear off of it but I can't figure how to prevent the key from falling out. Read somewhere to put a rag under the gear, which I have done many times working on tractors but I can't see where there is any to get to this bugger, and I really don't want to have to fish out a key among the timing gears.

Thanks.

The key in that pump is a woodrif key. When I pulled mine it didn't fall out. Sorry I don't have any suggestions, but I have never had trouble with one falling out. Maybe somebody else will be more knowledgeable.

I would suggest being extra careful putting it back in, I sheared a key on mine trying to reinstall it. Wasn't a big deal just a pain in the neck having to go through it all again. Plus the key was hard to find on the weekend. Luckily my friends uncle has lots of parts laying around.

Just don't pull the pump with the key at 6 o-clock, engine at TDC. That procedure is for p-pump's. The VE is keyed, the pump gear is keyed, the pump will only go on ONE way. I like to pull the pump with the key at about 1 o-clock. You don't have to worry so much about the key falling out. I still stuff a rag in the timing cover opening though, JIC.

bgilbert, On my truck when I screw the axcess plug out of the timing cover there is only about 1/4 inch between the gear and cover on the front, the shaft comes out the back with the pump. I don't see where there is anyplace to put a rag to catch the key.

If you take it out with the key at 12-o'clock, it wont fall into the housing.

One more question. How do you get to the nut underneath the pump that holds the pump on???

Ive tried everything I have and cant get on it.

Is there a special wrench that is needed?

Yes. You need an "S" shaped wrench. Unfortunately Harbor Freight discontinued their set. Snap-On makes a special 13mm wrench (shaped like a "J") to get that nut, but it's expensive. If you've got a 13 mm box end wrench you don't care about and a torch I'm sure you can come up with something.

Thanks wannadiesel. Guess I will go to the parts house tomorrow and pick up a cheap one and get the torch out.

Not about to do it with one of my Snap-On's.

Snap-On SP144 $30. http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....store&tool=all. It used to be like $20, but keeps going up.

I just bought a set of the harbor freight s wrenchs last weekend in okc, still had 6-8 sets each of standard and metric on shelf so you might check if you have 1 close to you, Terry

Weldor,
Here is how you get the rag into the front of the timing case.
I carefully stuffed it down the front of the gear with a small screwdriver leaving a tail so I could pull it back out and so I did not forget it when I was done. Kind like a REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT tag.

When you have the pump out you might want to check out the condition of the tappet cover for any leaks, it is easy to replace now that you have it down this far.
Also you might want to remove the timing pin and clean it up and get it working smooth so it works better for the next time.

I have a lot of pictures of the injection pump and engine at various stages of disassembly in my gallery.
