VP44 Died - Troubleshooting?
We'll I’ll join the group with my VP44 that died earlier this week. Or at least I think that is what happened. I was going around the corner and it just died like you shut off the key. Here are the tests that I have done.
First I turned on the key (to run lift pump) and pulled the drain which shoots out fuel (I do not have a gage to get actual pressure) but it appears to be working.
I then cracked the intake nut on the injector pump to see if fuel was getting that far, and it is, so fuel is getting through the filter.
I then cracked the supply lines to two injectors. When I crank the engine they squirt fuel with the timing. However when they are squirting it is not at thousands of psi. Further, once I stop the cranking and the lift pump runs out for around 5 seconds the supply lines still shoot fuel (no more breaks with the timing just constant flow) until the lift pump stops running, so I'm fairly certain the only pressure coming through the injector pump is from the lift pump.
I do have several questions
My Dodge is a year 2000, 2500. Does anyone know if the key on-off-on..etc procedure works to get the codes out of the odo?
I feel like I'm dealing with an electrical failure because of how it failed all of a sudden. Is there some sort of relay out side the lift pump that I need to check before I assume it is the VP. Note- I experienced no problems right up to failure.
Any other checks I should do?

Yes, the key trick should work for you. ON/OFF three times and leave on on the third. 0216 and 1688 are usually the VP death codes.
When mine died, it was similiar to yours and was the 1688. It would idle just long enough for me to get it off of the highway.
I have never heard of the relay, but maybe someone else has.

When you were going around the corner, how much fuel was in the tank? Maybe, just maybe if it was low some air got sucked into the fuel system and shut it down???? It's a wild guess but might just save you $1000. I would try cracking an injector and cranking the truck and see if she fires.
Truck is not running - waiting for me to diagnose and fix. I agrree on not pulling the injector. I have not pulled codes. I did try the on/off/on..etc proceadure once and it didn't give me codes but I' not sure I did it right so I will do it several times when i'm back at the truck on Monday.

If it's not showing any codes, I bet you got air in the system. Crack #3 injector, give 1/2 throttle and start turning it over. I wouldn't crank for more than 5-10 secs at a time or you might be buying a new starter. You might even have to crack more than one injector line to get it going because I've heard sometimes these things can be buggers to bleed although I haven't had that problem...yet. Keep us posted on how it's going.
