Vp44...again !!!!!

I replaced my VP44 about 1.5 years ago, roughly 28,000 miles due to intermittent engine shut-off. Just like last time, on my way home from work yesterday, I shifted from 3rd to 4th gear and the engine shut off. I was able to get into a parking lot, checked the codes on the odometer, and got PCU P1693 and ECU P1691...same as last time. After checking the codes I attempted to start the truck and it started and ran fine the rest of the way home. Started twice in my driveway, and started and ran fine this morning coming to work. I periodically checked for codes for 3 - 4 months after replacing the VP44 the last time and never had any codes.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated as I am about to put another $1000 into this money pit. That is in addition to the $500 for replacing OEM Lift Pump (lasted 3 months), $1000 to have a FASS installed (still working fine at 15 PSI), and another $200 - $300 a year in fuel additive...all to protect a VP44 that I got 28,000 miles out of.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I would start by removing and cleaning every ground wire you can find . these trucks will do all kinds of weird things with a bad ground, dont sentance the VP yet

also were did you buy the VP from ..some shops are known to leave in the old workinh control board

I bought it on a credit card that I have cancelled and no longer have access to the account so I can't verify...but if memory serves, I bought it through Pensecola Diesel. Of course, now I have read in another thread that they aren't the best!

I have also been reading more and more about electrical connections, so I will begin checking them as soon as possible.

In the event I need one, where is the best place to get a new pump?

Thanks for the help!

I agree with checking all connections and grounds and.....batteries. These trucks can do strange stuff if all of those aren't perfect.
As for the VP, yes unfortunately there was rebuilt VP's which came with the same old working FPCM (computer) and its been proven that those are only good for so many hot start cycles before they can fail electronically. Thats not to say this is the case with yours but that it may.

Remove your "HP Box" and see what happens.

My Edge Comp crapped out a couple of years ago and acted like a VP on its last legs. (Spats of cutting out, low power)

Removed the Comp, and all's been well for 2 years.

Another vote for Blue Chip!
After three $1000 - $1200 VP-44's in 4 yrs, I decided to go with Blue Chip.
Been 3 yrs and 75,000 miles and still going strong.

There was a thread a while back asking if any failures with Blue Chip VP's.
Was Zero at that time and still have not read of any.
Anyone else?

Don't go with Thoroughbred... they won't stand behind the stuff they sell.

My last (and hopefully the LAST one I'll have to buy) was a Blue Chip X pump also.

Worth every penny.
