I was told by a guy selling a rebuilt VP44 that the pump was rebuilt by Bosch. Is that even possible? Can you send these directly back to the factory? Seems a little weird given all of the shops doing rebuilds.

"all of the shops" are probably bosch certified rebuilders .... it involves a lot more than just throwing new parts in and to calibrate a rebuilt vp 44

I'd check it out thoroughly before buying it from "a guy".

Better off getting it from a reputable business.

that is what i bought, a genuine Bosch rebuild from a Bosch dealer $950

if i remember right, no one could rebuild them except Bosch back then?? the equipment required to do a VP cost a fortune. most fuel shops would not spend that kind of money and just sold rebuilt from Bosch i though.

i have a spare i bought from a guy, his brother worked at Bosch and gave him one. i bought it off him. it may be new, I'll check the tags.
