VP-44 waranty question
I just had my VP-44 replaced and the in-tank retrofit kit done under warranty on my 2002. It is covered under the Cummins Engine Warranty which is 5yr/100k. Some 2002 trucks have other powertrain warranties, but regardless of those, it is covered by the engine warranty.

Rick & others[U], what were the symtoms of your lift pump failure? Do you have a gauge? What did Dodge do to decide it needed changing? I have a 2002 also that I just purchased with48k miles on it. Have not decided on gauges yet.
Thanks for any help, Bill

i just went through the whole warranty deal for the lift pump and injection pump. this was back in may. i am out of warranty now.
here is what happened for me.
i took my truck to a local dealer for the dead pedal. they checked the lift pump and told me it wasnt pumping at all. this dealer told me that the only pump they can put on a truck is the intank lift pump and it would cost a little more than $900.
whoa! that is supposed to be a warranty item. i called dc and they claimed that the retro fit was not warranty. i made a few calls asking for managers etc and finally dc said they would have the dealer replace the l/p and i would have to pay a $200 ded. so i told the dealer to do the job and i paid the ded plus sales tax. lol...better than $900. i asked the service rep about the injection pump. they said it was fine. i had already thrown the po216 code.
a couple of months later i took the truck to the original dealer i bought it from and they took care of it right away. they checked the codes and told me they would order the new injection pump right then. they replaced that pump and said everyting was ok.
so now i need to get a fuel pressure gauge and i should be all set.
if you have to deal with your dealer and warranty dont be afraid to call d/c and complain. it may help save you some bucks.
one very important thing was the help i got from guys on this site. i cant thank jay enough.

My VP-44 sytoms were as follows:
When the outside temp was above 85 or 90, the truck felt sluggish, also at these temps I would get "dead pedal" once in a while. Pulled the P0216 code off the truck and took to my dealer for the fisrt trip. Dealer ran a volume test on the LP and found it was not to the flow specs, replaced with in tank retrofit under warranty, no questions asked. Service rep stated to bring it back again if the problems persisted. I had dealership clear the codes before I left.
Few weeks later got the dead pedal again, returned the truck to dealer. Deal called me a few hours later and said the IP was bad and was being replaced under warranty. Few hours later truck was done. Each time I went to the dealership I complained of sluggish performance and dead pedal, and the P0216 code, "injection pump timing failure." After the fix, truck runs great.
My dealship charged me no deductables, and did not argue w/ me about it. I dont have a FP guage (I know....

PO216 code question
RLee2500 (Rick) or anyone, a question, when you say "Pulled the PO216 code off the truck" do you mean that you did the turn the ignition off/on three times thing, and you got a P0216 code???
Also question for anyone, will this PO216 code usually come up when the lift pump is failing??
Sorry if these questions are "dumb" but just trying to learn! My newly purchased 2002 has till June 19th,2007 with cummins warranty. 48k miles, org liftpump.

Yes, I used the key method to pull the P0216 code. I have heard a bad lift pump can cause the P0216 code, but if thats the case, you will more than likely need a new VP in a short time anyways. My dealer told me that's is why they changed the LP first, then told me to come back if the problem persists. It's pretty bad when your service advisor tells you he will see you in a week to replace your injection pump.
