VP 44 question

I have a question. I am new to the forum and watched the how to remove and install the VP 44 last night.
1. During the install Dan moved the shaft on the pump. It looked to me that he moved it more than just to align it to the cam gear. I thought the pump came prepositioned and this is why the engine is rotatated to TDC.

2. Is the pump timed during rebuild?

3. If the pump is not timed at rebuild, could you just pull the pump, crank the motor to TDC, grab another pump and put it in?

4. I guess the question would be if you have a pump, rebuild it youself and the motor is not at TDC, could you turn the motor to TDC then put the rebuilt pump in without any problems?

I know these are probable dumb questions but hey I am in Alaska and the light is fading and I will have some free time on my hands. Hunting season is coming to a close and so is fishing.

Thanks
AKFred

you want the key on top so it won't fall off and into the engine, the key is the timing.......

maybe this way

I understand the key goes up so it will not fall out. From what I can see the only way to get the motor to TDC is remove the valve cover and watch for cylinder #1 and #6 intake valves to open. If that is not the only way to get the motor to TDC then what other way is there? But if TDC is not what one is trying to do when replacing the pump, But just to keep the key from falling out. Then the pump would be electronically controlled and the key is just for allignment and to keep the shaft from spinning.

You can use a mirror and look for the marks on the VP as you rotate, the marks will indicate TDC and have the key on top where it belongs, from what I understand. Haven't done a VP yet, but did a lot of research before buying the truck, so if I am wrong please correct me. Also, make sure you do the super glue idea on the key when installing, it may save you a lot of pain and cussing later on, if the key drops the timing cover has to come off so it can be removed.

tdc is when the keyway is at the top. timing is controlled automatically by the vp no need for u to set it. just install the rebuilt and look for any line leaks.

Most times the key is staked when the pump is rebuilt so it shouldn't fall out. You can turn the engine over after pulling the pump out. The key does the timing.
