Vehicle Speed Sensor in tranny, what for?

2001 truck, what purpose does the tranny mounted Vehicle Speed Sensor
serve?

Only mention I've seen concerned shift points, but tranny pretty much
shifts ok and TC locks decent. (Really poor fluid coupling until then, tho.)

Been reading the VSS on the diff does the speedo and ABS and etc.

Getting VSS codes but everything seems to be working ok. Thot cruise
control went out, but bought a new VSS and the cruise started working
again. (didn't install new VSS, just wiggled a bunch of lines)

Also getting some dead pedal and 0216. New lift pump helped some, but
not all. Any chance the VSS might affect the VP44 somehow? Please?

Thanks,
Lowell

The speed senso tell the brain what speed your going so it knows when to shift. You kinda need it.

Thanks.

Went ahead and put the new one in. Only had to replace a cup
or two of tranny fluid, not as bad as I'd thought.

Connector had so much grime built up in it that it wouldn't fit
onto new sensor. It was barely/maybe in the old one. Cleaned
it out good and snapped it in.

Don't know yet if it helped shifting any better.

Still got VP44 appointment. Oh, well.
