Thanks JohnH, nickg, and outsman!

I got this ready for my next day off friday and will attempt with great guidance.
I already degreased the area because it was grimy as hell and I hate to work with thw hands covered in grease the entire time wiping them due to overbuilding of old grease residue.

Will let u know how it goes soon!
Thks T

Ya guys are great!

Another note is that the seal kit I bought from my local cummins dealer, (14$ canadian) came with instructions/ and pictures of how to replace the seal....
very handy indeed
and it was a dual lip seal as well

I also found when I took mine apart someone had coated the nose of the PS pump with RTV where it fits into the seal retainer, what this did was keep the oil from leaking, the only harm I can see with coating the "nose" with RTV is that should the PS seal go it would allow PS fluid to enter the crankcase, not that it would cause any damage(short term), and you would know that you lost oil as the steering/brakes would be complaining as you applied them, you'd just be wondering where the PS fluid went when you could not find any external leaks. If you were on the road and were far from parts, it would be a quick get on the road repair. 15mm wrench and 15mins to slide pump out coat with RTV and slide back in,
I thought it was funny that mine never leaked prior to swapping out a pump and after the pump it leaked like a sieve. I fitted the old seal on the pump shaft and you could see day light between the sealing surface and the pump shaft.......so there was no way of telling how long ago the seal had failed, and the RTV kept the leak at bay.
the RTV looked alot like the permatex "RIGHT STUFF" which BTW is about the only RTV that will NOT leak when used, at least when I do a job that Ionly want to do once I use the "RIGHT STUFF"

Are there any symptoms of a vacuum leak other than leaking oil? I read someone say they had excessive smoke. Could this be caused by a vacuum leak?

No, all the vacuum pump does is drives your power steering, helps with brakes, and your vent controls.
