Updated VP44 Bracket?

So what does the updated bracked for the VP44 look like? I've seen many post that say that its gone through a couple of changes.

Here is the one I just took off mine but it was attached with 3 10mm bolts and not T50 torx like the VP44 install threads that I've read.

Plus it was only bolted into the back of the pump and nothing to the block or the bracket still in the engine bay.

The pictures are ofthe old style but it is not broken like most

A new one from Cummins is less than $60 they usuall stock them because the end of the bracket in pic2 breaks at the weld on all like pictured. It's PITA to install because PS pump has to be pulled to install new one

THanks scout.

Since its not broken and there's not a Cummins place near me I'll go with it then. I guess I'll just change it out next time my IP goes out.

If they're not even cracked, then I don't worry about them.

Mine was broken when I pulled my pump. The Cummins dealer had 9 in stock when I called, part number 3938707. There is no reason not to upgrade to the new bracket while the pump is off. You might feel pretty embarrassed to be replacing the pump in short order because the bracket broke not too long after installation and the pump shook itself to death. Here is a link to a page that has the exploded diagram. I will try to get a pic of mine installed.

I used the same part number, worked great. I have a few tips to pass along.

The portion of the new bracket that bolts to the block has 10mm holes, the bolts are 8mm. The original bracket was just plate steel and had 8mm holes. I'm not sure if Cummins intended to use a shoulder bolt in the updated bracket or if they enlarged the holes to allow adjustment.

I wasn't happy with the way the small heads on the 8mm bolts secured. I also thought the bolts needed to be longer because the new bracket is thicker. I swapped out the top bolt for a longer socket head bolt (8mmx1.25x30mm, IIRC) and used a 1/4" washer. I found that the socket head was too tall for the lower hole; the power steering pump hit it. I decided to use the original bolt in the lower hole.

The biggest tip is to install the upper part of the bracket to the VP44, then install the VP44 on the front cover, then install the lower portion of the bracket BEFORE you install the power steering pump. I tried to guess at the alignment with the VP44 only half in the hole and ended up removing the power steering pump again to adjust the lower bracket. The lower bolt on the bracket is covered by the PS pump, no other way to loosen it. Installing the PS pump last is a PITA, but doable.

It took me longer to install and remove the PS pump twice than it took to do the other work for the whole job!

I'm right smack dab in the middle of all of this mess right now. I bent the upper end of the original bracket while removing my vp44. For an explanation, see my post in the emergency section. I went to our fab shop today and my buddy said we could straighten the old bracket with no problems.
From what I read here, while I have my vac/ps pump backed off, it looks like I'm in a good spot to upgrade the mount. I have a big Cummins shop just down the freeway from my work. I'll look up this part number and see what I can do.
Is this upgrade worth the price of parts?
Will it prolong the life of the IP any longer?

I looked it up before I knew about the upgrade. Is this the one?

the new bracket does not fit with the air compressor on the engine, so all the heavier engines use the old bracket.

The updated brackets are the same for all 24V engines.

You mean in trucks with air brakes?

Correct it does not fit with the air compressor equipped engines. But as usual someone always decides that they know it all and others don't. Wonder how many of the improved bracket he has installed on an engine with the stock air compressor? I have the complete kit in the original plastic bag that cannot be installed on my engine. It fits with the vacuum pump engines. There are several timing case spacing differences in verious engines and on some it may fit, but mine is completely stock from Cummins and does not have the clearance.

Whatever...I guess all those updated brackets I installed over the years changing VPs on medium duty trucks with air compressors was a dream.
