UPDATE Rear end issues

contacted Spicer who say they have been having problems with their clutches. The guy they gave me to contact is not in the office until Monday, so we will see what he says. But I have a ton of time and money invested in this rear end, not to mention a set of good tires that HAD over 1/2" of tread on them. right now they are about to show the cords.

OF COURSE, he says he never has heard of this issue before, but will send me parts to fix it. so a box comes and it has ONE paper covered disc plate and One cupped steel. The new material is some reinforced fiber material, so I guess I am supposed to pick a side and throw this paper disc in so it will wear out and chew up my gears and bearings again.

I guess I eat all the oil and the year of tire wear, I figured on the labor already

SO I took the rear end apart again today. Two spider gears are split right in half, I am assuming from the shock from the tires dragging. Called Spicer again, The tech guy helped me, and said they must have made a mistake when they only shipped one friction and one plate. I called the other guy back and he said he would send me another kit, but do not use the clutches in the kit, instead use the stuff he sent, I told him I only received one of each and he said they should have sent a full set.

So truck is down and awaiting parts. He never called me back like he said he would, so have no clue when I am getting them. I dont know what Spicer is doing with their new clutch packs, they know they do not work right. Hope no-one else has to order a kit anytime soon.

Spider gears split in half does not sound to me like differential clutch problems as much as very hard shock loading. I usually see this from spinning tires with one on pavement and one on dirt coming onto pavement and spinning at a high rate. Or sidestepping a clutch. Spinning tires and hitting a pothole or something similar with one tire, Something like that.

LOL, to wear off a half inch of rubber turning meant it just about had to be locked, you wouldn't be nearly as abusive to the spider gears doing what you describe as it would be locked solid during normal driving.

I am thinking the locked symptom was a result of the broken gears.

this morning he said he was sending parts overnight air.

Rick; I think when I hooked up my 14,000LB 5th wheel and the tires were still dragging it may have had a bit of "shock load"

Yea, that might do it although that is not really "shock" load. I am really surprised you did not break an axle.

Well truck is all fixed. Thanks to Ryan and Joe at Spicer. Joe is awesome, tech dept. guy, he really knows his stuff.

The rear end works better than it ever has, I have always had more wear on my rear tires than the front. Always could feel the rear limited slip lightly chattering and felt something was tight.

now time to put a new set of tires on..... hopefully i can get 20,000 miles out of them! that would double the rear tire life i have gotten the past 8 years. SHOPPING TIME
