Two wheel drive low gear
Two wheel drive low gear
Hi guys
The other day, on one of the forums, I saw a mention of a way to run in low gear with two wheel drive. Now when I want to look into it, I can't for the life of me find it. I tried to do a site search but that didn't work either. Would someone please send me to the right place for the info?

Thankx fellas
Ruadh

If your talking about your transfer case on a 4x4 you can hook up something to the vacuum lines to the actuator on the front drive shaft that will prevent it from engageing the front axle. Not sure about what to use Hope this helps.
Re:Two wheel drive low gear
This page has several references to modifications that will allow use of 2WD low:

http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/mods/index.html

Just scroll down to the section entitled "Axle/Driveshaft Related."

Thank you Rich and JFPointer
This should help a lot. I drive hot shot and do a lot of 4wd backing up and this seems like just the ticket. I wonder why Dodge used such a high ratio in low gear? It's allmost like they had this tranny kicking around and wanted to use it rather than tender a new design.

Ruadh

Also will not cover any medical bills cause by head hitting the roof of the cab.

When you back these bad boys up in 4low and cut the wheel they buck like a mule. Before you can get your foot on the clutch your other foot starts hammering the go pedal in a repeditive motion that makes the matter much worse.
With the front wheels driving it binds up the drivetrain when you try and turn. It's real bad on gravel and not much better on grass. So if you can put it down into 2low you get the benifit of the low range crawling abilitly and the easy on the head of 2wd.
It's not a real problem with an auto tranny but for us manual guys it's much easier on the clutch if you use low side when backing heavy loads. This way you can completly release the clutch instead of slipping it the whole time you're backing the load.

DB

Thank you Darrell. I couldn't have said it better myself.
First time I experienced it, I had a fit cuz I thought I'd broken something. I wonder if it is the drive line bind or could it be posi-trac related?
Ruadh

The first time I did it i hit my knee on the dash and my head on the top of the cab.

Thankx Darrell
My truck is brand new, so I don't need a clutch quite yet, but I'll be thinking about aftermarket stuff when I do.
I back up a lot of loads in the coarse of the day and this 2wd low thing will really help.

Ruadh
