Turbo noise.

Hi all.

My ram seems to be making a weird turbo noise when making big boost. ie. high rpms etc.

If a really lay into it say from a stop sign or something, the turbo noise goes from the usual high pitch whine to more of a buzzing sound once engine gets really revving.

I pulled the intake hose off the other day, grabbed the wheel of the turbo and felt no slop in it, didn't see anything unusual looking from that end.

Any ideas???

The turbo had no up or down OR in & out play?

Do you have the stock MWE Silcener Ring installed still?

Does the wastegate actuator rod have tension on it?

What about the air filter assembly?

Check your intercooler hoses also. My brothers truck sounded awful when his hose was leaking

I didnt see any guages listed for you but if you do have a boost guage it can buzz it higher boost levels.

Nope, no gauges....

Silencer ring is long gone....

Never used to make that noise

if there is no movement in the turbo from the inlet end... does that mean the turbo is okay???

I haven't checked the intercooler boots yet..

I wondered about those as it is only under high boost pressure...

How much boost does a stock CTD make???
What's the waste gate set at???

I remember when I bombed my 2nd gen truck I noticed a strange noise from the turbo as well when laying down like 30 lbs of boost. Never had a problem with it. Almost like a whine vs. a whistle. Seems normal to me. My 04 does it all the time because I think it's putting out more stock boost then my other one did. Doest that make sense?

look for a cut/torn boot coming off the intercooler where it gets close to the fender sheet metal

Hmmm. very strange.

Don't notice any more smoke or such than normal.

I'm assuming if I had a torn boot it'd smoke like a frieght train???

I haven't had any more time to investigate further.

Hopefully I can have a look tommorow.

How much boost should a stock 99 CTD make??

a mechanic friend (who normally works on farm tractors and heavy equipment) said he thought it looked like my wastegate might be seized...????

If that were the case wouldn't it overboost and my check engine light would be on due to a code???

My major concern is that the turbo isn't about to fly apart and cause major engine dammage.

What's it cost to get a new turbo or rebuild my old one????

Thanks for the input guys.

No movement is good. Slop in impeller is bad.
Your truck should see around 19 psi boost stock.

Some small slop is normal. about 1/32 of an inch. This is because all stock ctd have oil film bearings in the turbo. If you had a ball bearing turbo than yes NO slop is normal... Just dont freak if you can get the shaft to move a little. Its probably normal.

Spiltting hairs arent you? I dont call 1/32" slop. Most people probably dont even feel that little movement. But your right.

I have a similar sound with my turbo. It was after I yanked the silencer and threw in the BHAF. My noise doesn't happen at WOT though. Although I always hear it when it runs at higher boost. My turbo does not have any slop in it, no boost leaks, engine runs great. I think it is some sort of harmonic resonance that only occurs at a certain range of turbo shaft RPMs.

I wish .03125" (1/32") was splitting hairs....I'm working in the +/- .0001 of an inch....1/32" is a mile on the stuff I make a work....

is there a actual spec for end play for the shaft? like a actual reading that it shouldn't be more than?

Thanks for the reassurance guys......

just got back from a week at a cattle show and pulled my trailer home....\

Noise seems to have changed again....... Much higher pitched now... Very weird...

Runs fine.

Just wanted to make sure my turbo isn't about to explode and destroy my entire engine....
