Transmission overdrive question

I have been told by a Dodge tech not to leave my trans in OD when pulling my travel trailer. Always push the disconnect switch on the shift lever.

Why can I not use the overdrive function? It sure makes the engine run higher rpms, fuel milage sucks.

Will this damage the transmission?

BTW, a 2000 quad cab, 2whdrive, stock all the way, 3.55 gears.

Thanks!!

I tow my sailboat in OD. I have 3.55's as well. I believe that as long as it's not changing gears back and forth (in and out of OD) it should be fine. If it is going back and forth, then use the OD lockout button.

I tow a tall enclosed 10k lbs trailer in OD, but I pay close attention to what the motor and transmission are doing. Waiting for that TC to lock before going from 45 to 65+mph can be a test of patients, but it seems to keep the temps in check... on the straight and level.

I believe the TC will not lock in 3rd unless OD is off. If you are climbing, yes, turn the OD off so the TC can lock in 3rd.

I think the shifting pattern is generally 1, 2, 3, lockup, unlock, OD, lockup. So, yes, it should lock in 3rd.... OD is the same as any other gear when towing. If the engine starts seeking or lugging, downshift and stay there.... JM2C
