transmission fluid question

i have an automatic 47re 98.5. i was wondering if i can put dextron 3 or mercon fluid in my tranny i know it calls for atf 3 but the dextron is cheaper and i read that it shifts better.and if i do change the fluid i was just gonna drop the pan and change the filter and then fill it with dextron 3. my problem is do they mix together or will i have to drain it many times ,i plan on putting a drain plug kit in it and put my sensor there in the pan right now i have it in the front right test port it just dont get very hot even pulling, maybe 140 degrees thanks

NO, NO, NO, NO!!! Dont do it. I am a I work for dodge and I know for a fact that if you put Dex/Mer in the dodge trans they will mess up. The ATF-4 fluid is made with additives and the Dex is not. The dodge trans were actually build to be used with the ATF only, if you put the other in there it wont work with the seals and stuff. So, just to put it simply, DONT DO IT!!!

I have been using dexron/mercon since I rebuilt the trans 25,000 miles ago. It shifts quicker, I have no slip and have had no problems at all since I installed it. Also when I had the trans serviced at DTT Bill K. installed the same fluid (dexron/mercon).

ATF+4, or as I prefer Amsoil Universal.

I'm with F-t-F on this one. I've seen my fair share of torque convertor shudder from having the wrong fluid in a 47re. I would stick with the ATF+4.

Dextron III in mine for close to 200k as recommended by DTT.
Call around and the tranny shops will tell you the same.
The +3 and +4 fluids are just a Dodge money making scam.
