I have a quick question about the transfer case in my truck. The case is leaking oil only when I drive it. Does a guy have to pull the transfer case to change the seals. Any info would be a great help thanks Garry

 

Mine is doing the same after a complete set of seals. My trans guy said to put a gob of silicone on the end of the output shaft and then put the driveline in place and this should help. Mine still leaks while driving and usually has a drop on the bottom of the rear seal. I'll be looking into this cuz I think its getting worse.

Yeah the silicone thing sounds like a coverup for more of a problem. Like old blues said a seal shouldn't wear out that easily, I would definetely inspect the shaft for wear. I've cone across the problem quite a bit with slip joints, torque converters, and other similar spots.

 

The cases can get hairline cracks in them, too, so, you might want to look real close to try & be sure it's really the seal that is leaking.

 

For the aft output seal no TC pull needed. For the front output seal, yes, ya have to pull it but its really not that bad. I'm rebuilding my TC right now and it seems this is where my problems began - the front output shaft started leaking and the case went dry. Wasn't long before I burned up a shift fork. I think the original problem was pitting of the front otuput shaft. Last night I put the output shaft on a lathe and tried to "sand out" the pits. This worked surprisingly well but I'm still considering replacing it.

BTW... tbtrans.com had the best prices (that I could find) for bearings, seals & forks. Bearings are US or Jap. Some vendors are 5 times higher (no affiliation, yada yada)....bruce

 

Mine leaked straight out of the factory, the dealer said "a little leakage is normal". Bull! The case only contains a very small amount of oil and can't stand being run low. I changed the seal myself and found the out put shaft had a scratch right where the seal rode. My guess is someone at the factory lays them down on a metal rack and scratches them. I polished it out with a fine stone and changed the seal, it's been OK the last 7 or so years.

 

check for cracks in the upper part of the housing. It is a common problem from what I hear. My case cracked at first it just leaked a little so I pulled it out and resealed it no change. It finally started leaking alot so i pulled it again cleaned it really well wiped the ouside down with talc powder and wiped it off I found a 4-5" crack in the top of the case. I needed the truck so I called the guys over at 1-800-mud-road around 7:00pm they were localish to atlanta they called me back the next morning and by noon I picked up a new rebuilt tcase.

 

Some yokes have a rubber washer inside yoke that is easy to overlook. Believe this is what guy recomended RTV to cure. Just a thought.
