trans problem? Help please
trans problem? Help please
My dads 2001 3500 it having problems. It has 59000 or so miles on it. When he starts it up in the morning and puts it in gear it wont go till he revs it up and then it goes. He said it only does it in the morning after sitting all night. We live in souther cal so it is not cold. He says once it is hot no problems. Could the trans be going out. He had it serviced everytime it needed to be and the fluid is not burned. What gives?/
No problems. There is a valve that is leaking internally that normally would hold pressure in the TC overnight. Just have him start it in neutral, or just wait for it to build pressure in gear. It won't build pressure in Park. It won't hurt anything. Mine has been doing it for 8 years, even after I had Georend build a tranny for it. Dave has it built so it pumps while in Park. Just something you got to get used to.
Drive it like you stole it.

The "fix" is to toss the check valve before it causes problems and fix the VB so it circulates fluid in park. The check valve is a cheap fix to stop the complaints of this very thing. It is perfectly normal for a trans with few miles to do this. The 727 has for 30 years with no issues. Just put the trans in neutral while you wait for the engine to warm up for a minute and it will be fine. Just like you don't want to immediately start a cold engine and drive off, you don't want to do this with an auto transmission. Anything the delaer will do will wasted money. Save your $$$ and take 60 seconds in neutral before you start out.
I have a similar problem that has happened a couple times. When I coast on a down hill, I have experienced the transmission not picking back up when I step on the accelerator. Just this morning it did it and I had to rev it to 3Gs before it would grab. After that it worked normal the rest of the way to work or about 50 miles. Could this be caused by the same check valve?....or do I gotta buy a new transmission??? ...Help!

My truck does this also, but only after sitting for a week or two. Once the trans gets hot, it pulls like a wild boar. All the diesel guys said the same thing, let the truck idle for a couple of minutes to build pressure.
