Tranny Trouble?

I got a tranny question for you guys. My wife drives a 98 24 valve with an automatic tranny in it. Here lately it doesn't want to shift out of 1st but only does it on occasion. I checked the fluid and it was a little low so I topped it off. I got a call this morning that she drove it like 5 miles and it still wouldn't shift so she turned around and went home only to have it shift on the way. She said it didn't do it again the rest of the commute to work. I don't know what else I need to tell you to describe the problem other than it doesn't want to shift out of 1st. I had the tranny flushed and filter changed about this time last year and plan on having it done again this week. I thought I would see if you guys new of anything else I should check out? Forgot, the truck is totally stock.

Look down the list and you will see "trans shift problem". Mine is a 99 Cummins and is doing the same thing. I tried all of the suggestions I received and nothing helped. I just got a call from the dealer (Commonwealth Dodge) and I will include in detail everything they said in my string when I get home tonight. For now just know they said I need a rebuild or a new transmission. I have searched all local shops and vendors and found the best deals for what I want on the internet. I found everything from stock to bullet proof. I will find out what names I can name and post those here this evening as well. Good Luck.

Acording to the FSM (you should own one) It could be:

1) Governor circuit-electrical fault
2) Valvebody malfunction
3) Front servo / kickdown band problem.

Symptoms are 1st and reverse only.

Thanks for the input guys. I took it to the dealer last night and they hooked it up to the puter. It said the speed sensor was no good, so I replaced it, less than $20. Time will tell if that was it or not. Again, thanks for the help.
