Tranny shop refused to do flush.

I haven't serviced my tranny for 70k. Decided it was time.
The shop I took it to, when I went back he said they would not do a flush, the oil was too dirty (didn't look nearly as bad as a lot I've seen, although not perfect), He said just run it until it needs a rebuild. Maybe a couple years.
He said that when the do their power flush on a tranny that doesn't get it every 30K or so, sometimes within 2K miles the tranny will go out and they will get blamed.

This sounds a little odd to me.

I couldn't even pay them to do a watered downa service, such as drop the pan, change the filter, adjust the bands., etc.,

Thanx,
Clay in Salt Lake City., Just moved here from Burbank, CA.

I've heard of this before, they are afraid they will losen up and lodge gunk in your VB. Pretty common actaully. Usually the shops could care less.

Ask yourself, if your trans developed a problem shortly after they serviced it would you blame them? A little profit is not worth the bad mouthing they would get. And they are right

I work at a BMW dealership and I've seen it happen more than once. You get a vehicle with really high milage that hasn't kept up with services(not saying that's you) so you got really old dirty fluid, you drain it and put new stuff in there and then it won't back off your rack. Oh crap! The new fluid is clean and all of the detergents/lubricants are working their butt off, so they are cleaning out the tranny. You'll get slippage if the clutch packs are really worn. But we are stupid grease monkeys that don't know anything either(that's the general consensus anyways).

I just did the service myself.
Since I don't know how to "FLUSH" anything except a toilet, I couldn't do that part.

So tell me one thing since you all know so much more than me.
If I only replace 5 out of a probable 17 quarts of fluid.
WHY IS THE FLUID NOW PERFECTLY CLEAN AND THE RED COLOR??????? I drove it about a half mile around the block and then back again to check the level, and I expected not to be able to tell I even did anything????

You sure wouldn't be able to tell there was any brownish oil mixed in there unless I told you.

I still think someone is not telling me something, or the shop was awfullly paranoid.

you need to loosen the valve body and let the oil drain, once you have an aftermarket tc it will have a drain plug too and all the oil can be replaced.

a mag or similiar aftermarket pan makes the job a snap

When I bought my '02 last year with 49K miles on it, I took it to a reputable transmission shop in Provo Utah (close to where I live) and they were happy to flush it. They showed me the pan, there was a fair amount of what looked like "chocolate pudding" stuck to the magnet but otherwise it was OK. Shifted much better once they did it. Granted 70K is more than 49K but not that much more... I don't know if the previous owner of my truck ever had the transmission serviced or not. The fluid looked dark red but didn't smell burned before the service.

Would you tell me where that shop is in Provo.
I could get there in 25 minutes. I'm off 106th S.

My oil did not smell burnt. It just smelled like regular oil too.
Now that I've changed the filter and wasted 5 quarts of +4 atf, I'd still like to get the flush. Now that I won't be in the California heat much more, I think it is a good idea.

Last time I went through baker 2 weeks ago it was 119 degrees.
That's crazy. It can't be good on a tranny.

I wonder if anybody drives that every day in the summer and has to get a rebuild every other month???

I know a tranny guy - he insists that the flush is not the way to go. Change the fluid and filter often. If you are seeing those kind of temps are you using synthetic?

I have only ever used the recommended Mopar oil in my tranny.
I have read that the ATF+4 is fully synthetic.
My guess is that the original +3 is a partial synthetic or something like that.

OK, So I won't go get a flush.
The oil looked awfully clean anyway. Just that magnet had sludge on it. Which is normal, I think. I changed the filter, but have no idea how to even tell (or even care) what kind of dirt the other filter had filtered out.

Ok,
