My mileage has decreased from about 20mpg to 15mpg recently. This has occurred about the same time my tranny started getting worse. It doesn't lock up as firmly as it used to and I have to practically let off the throttle to get it to shift into 4.

I'm going to replace my torque converter and do valve body work as well as replace normal wear items in the tranny.

Does Aamco do good work? They said they use a torque converter made by Superior and it has a billet cover. Is superior a decent converter for the money?

Is transgo a good shift kit and is that what people mean when they say have a valve body done?

I'm not going to mod my truck much and I baby it. Will pull heavy maybe once a year very short distance.

Any recommendations welcomed. I'm in the Portland area.

Could I get decent results by doing everything myself with rebuild kits and these low cost parts? I don't need the best and toughest, just want good mileage and proper shifting.

badme: you said no complaints on the transgo, but does that mean you like how it shifts now? How did it change the shifting?

 

You could get things done just fine with low cost parts on your own... These transmissions are EXTREMELY simple and with the proper tech manuals the average Joe can go through one pretty easy...

About that TC, I don't see any pics of the "billet" front cover and it could be a simple drilled and tapped ring welded on the stock cover instead of the six welded nuts... I also see no way to contact this guy other than an email and no mention of a warranty

I would pass on both of the e-bay items. The converter looks like a stock one(one picture ) I agree with ckt_santiago

 

$699.00 is not a bad price for a name brand converter. I also agree with the others, leave the ebay ones alone.

 

try sonnex for a converter. use the name for a website...i got one. its a little loose cuz i let my builder spec it and hes a drag racer but im killin it and it will not break. triple disc billet for around 700 bucks and a yr unlimited warranty. that and a good drag racer rebuild will do ya right. look for a guy that does 727 trans for drag racers and hell know all he needs to ...

Sonnax will not sell direct. They also do not sell whole converters, only parts.
I called transtar last week and priced a triple disc billet converter for my 47RE and it was $400.00 my cost plus shipping. Transtar also will not sell direct unless it is to a tranny shop.

No kidding I deal with AXIOM at my shop... But if I can get triple discs for $400 from Sonnex that would be great. Any max torque ratings? What about core charges? And if there is a core charge does it have to be similar or can it be a stock TC that is turned in for core?

Sonnax is 12 miles from me. They do NOT build converters at Sonnax. They only supply parts to build them. Sonnax makes great products, but you must buy them from a distributor. I would love to run down the street and pick up parts from them, but I can't. Sonnax ships them to Transtar and Transtar ships them to me. They go on a 200 mile trip to get 12 miles.

 

I have already bought from Transtar in the past,I just need a converter part #. I just have a feeling that at $400 it is a single clutch/billet cover.
