Ticking Under My Dash.

The other night I was driving home and had to make a quick stop. After I took off again I started to hear a loud ticking coming from under the drivers side of the dash. The noise only comes when the transmission is in drive or reverse and goes away in park or nuetral. Engine or road speed to not effect it. It turns off when i turn my dome lights on manually or if the door jam switch turns them on. Also verified it is not the instrament cluster. It will vary in loudness but that's it. Was wondering if this could be due to a bad tranny ground that I have heard guys talk about since it only happens in gear. I drive the truck over a hundred miles a day so it is bugging the heck out of me but i work full time and am in tech school so i havn't had time to dig in to it yet. Any help is greatly appreciated and if i left anything let me know and post it asap. Thanks again.

Sounds like it's afraid of the dark.

Are you on speaking terms with the missus? Did you just buy a new life insurance policy? Are there strange oil leaks in your driveway? Does the UPS man deliver to your house on a daily basis?

Seriously, I haven't heard of this, but I would check the codes on your truck. Just turn the key to the "on" position without starting the truck three times slowly and leave it on the third time. You will see the PCM and ECM codes if there are any....

Other than that, buy your wife some flowers and the ticking noise should go away. Or let her drive the truck for awhile....

Sounds like a relay. But not sure why it would only "tick" in drive or reverse. There really isn't anything moving under there so I would guess its a relay or something similar. Pull the cover off the fuse panel and see if its louder in that area. PS, I think if she wanted to get you she'd put it under the seat! Kurt.

I know this sounds weird but is it with your foot on or off the throttle? I found a very methodic ticking sound coming from my fuel pedal when I put the truck in cruise control and take pressure off of it. I'm sure there is just a bushing shot and it lets the pedal rattle with the trucks vibration, but yours sounds a little different. It's worth a shot to look anyways.
