Is there a Difference????

My trans is in bad bad shape and a buddy of mine just bought a 02' 2500 gasser to swap his nv and 12v into. I was wondering if the 47re out of a gas truck is the same as whats in a diesel, because if so i can get that trans for free and put it in my truck while my trash one is being built. I don't expect it to last forever with my mods but just wonder if it's even worth my trouble to get a few months or so out of it or if my truck will just eat it in a matter of days. Thanks for any help!!

I think the V-10 and 5.9 put out close to the same torque, so it'll handle it for a while.

Essentially the same internals, besides some springs in the valve body and torque converter. It would save you a whole bunch of work to save up and rebuild the "gasser" trans and limp along with the one that's in your truck now. Or if you need something now, a shift kit (for diesel) and your stock converter would get it going right, assuming the transmission is good and none of the clutch packs are burnt up.

Thanks for all the quick replies but unfortunately the one from the donor truck is trash. Pulled the pan on it this morning and it is full of metal and sludgy clutch material. So I called every place I could think of Suncoast, DTT, HTS, ATS, and Goerend. Goerend and HTS were the only ones who even really asked me info about my truck, the others just kinda tried to shove a high dollar trans toward me. Goerend was the cheapest, but it was still over 4k when all was said and done, and I know you get what you pay for but I'm a poor soon to be college kid so I called a local shop and they said they could build one for $2400 with a shift kit and triple disc TC and claimed it would more than hold it.I know most of you have already been down this road and I trust your opinion...So I guess my next question is should I take the cheap route or bite the bullet and order the real deal??

If you plan on laying down your power all the time, either empty or loaded, the cheaper route will get you what you pay for typically...about half way. Not to say you couldn't go a few hundred thousand on it. If you are going to keep the truck for a good few years, and add a bunch of power, go the expensive route, just don't kill yourself in the mean time budget wise. I've seen several work trucks with over 200k on the stock trans, a few over 300k. But don't short yourself with a "weak" tranny if you honestly are going to bomb it.

Just speaking from experience. I had my trans rebuilt at aamco () 4 years ago. A year later it blew, spent all winter rebuilding it myself with decent parts. Then another year later blew O/D, was so sick of pulling that dammed tranny I threw in a 5 speed (then blew a clutch doing a sledpull ). So if I handed out the 4-5k 4 years ago, I'd probably be happy now and would have spent less. But, I was in a position like you, broke and just getting into working world. I just call it all a learning curve, hopefully I'm past the hump now.
