Test a VP44?

Sposed to ask for a friend...

He has been having issues, and after reading around here, looks like he is getting dead pedal, and I believe he had the death code of 0216(i think). He wanted to know if there was a way to test the VP44 to see if it is the certain culprit? I have not seen any such testing methods around here, but thought maybe I am looking in the wrong places. I wanted to get the straight answer before confronting him with my findings.

Or am I way off base here, and he just needs to start saving up for the new IP?

if it matters, its an 02 auto 2500, superchip and of course, 0 gauges...

cummins has a tool you can buy that you plug into the VP. Has some alligator clamps for the battery. You plug it in and start your truck, then the tester has a switch for low to high idle. and if your pump doesnt switch between the two, its a dead VP. I found mine on ebay for $80 used.

and i still havent needed to use it!

Thanks for the info, I just talked to him and told him again that he needs gauges

He has heard from someone about the TPS could possibly be the cause of this code, and after some searching I found info about resetting the APPS, gonna pass this on to him as well.

If he's got a dead pedal and the 0216 code then you can bet money it's the VP. Those are classic VP signs.

So what if you just get the 216 and the dead pedal when running in modified software mode? And, you don't get the dead pedal and the 216 running the stick software???

That is what mine is doing.

jsflagstad, My theory is that if your running mod software this will call for more fuel than normal. If you have a week LP this will make the problem worse and will cause the dead pedal effect to be more pronounce than if you run it stock. Do you have good FP???

I think I am going to add a Holley Blue pump to it this week. What all is needed besides the pump? I will put it inline with the existing lift pump.

So if I got the dead pedal and the 216, is the VP44 now hurt? Like I said, it won't do it running the stock software.

**Sorry for the off topic question**

I don't know anything about diesels but I test drove a 99 2500 Cummins today and it had a blue contanier up against the firewall, is that a Holly Blue pump or what is that?
