test vp44
I have been following this forum for some time and am amaised at the massive amount of knowledge you all have. I think you know more about the Dodge Cummings than Dodge.
I enjoy engines and although all of my past experience has been with gas engines, when the cummings in my sons 99 developed a piston rattle I did not hesitate to tear into it. Everything went well through out the whole deal till we started it up. The engine sounds great but it acted like it was flooded. There was a lot of white smoke and it would really burn your eyes and nose. The local diesel injection service told me that the pump was out of time. When they finished with it , I had a new VP44.......can these things go bad lying around? Is there anyone that can just test my old pump. I dont need a rebuilt pump on the shelf.
Thanks for your help J

MKUBACAK I do not trust the shop that did the work. They got me in the door, due to my stupidity, on a $50 set the timing job and when I went to pick it up, I had a $1400 new pump.
PGILES Thanks for the Cummings idea. I got my parts from a old school buddy that has access to Cummings parts. I did not think of him for testing since he is a parts only outlet. I will talk with him tomorrow.

If price is a concern, call around to both Cummins shops and possibly independents. Not sure how far you are willing to travel, but you have Abilene, San Angelo, Lubbock, and even DFW that you can surely find some good people. I have not used a Cummins dealer in Lubbock, but I have always had great service from Diesel Injection Service in Lubbock.

You can not set the timing on a 24 Valve Cummins. The VP44 is an electronically controlled pump. It controls when a cylinder will get a shot of diesel and how much it needs to inject at that time. You can't set the timing on these. The older 12V engine you could since almost everything on that engine is mechanically controlled including the P7100 injection pump. Hope this clarefies this.
Oh BTW, it Cummins not Cummings, no G.

jrs dodge diesel Thanks for the info. Wish I had talked with you before I let those guys have my truck. Sorry about my spelling,,,I never have been very good at that...or running this computer.
mkubacak I tried Desiel Injection service. They cannot test the 24 valve pumps. My old high school buddy, that is a Cummins dealer said that Cummins South Plains in Ft, Worth is the place that all the Cummins dealers use for 6bt repair. Guess I will give them a call.
