Terrible mileage and low on power

I'm not sure if this is the correct area but...

My last fill up was 12.88 MPG hand calculated. Down from the miserable 14.5 MPG normal mix city and HWY. I just pulled the IAT and MAP sensors and cleaned them, they were not dirty at all but cleaned them anyway. I have checked the intercooler boots and all seems fine. Truck is down on power and was just in to the dealer for different problems, blown power steering pump and problems with the ABS. I was able to drive with the diesel mechanic and he also drove the truck and I commented on the lack of power. He, without so much as saying agreed but it would still more than likely pass the volume test and no LP/IP on warranty if it passes. Fuel pressure readings are 10.5-11 at idle and down to 3 WOT, filter is 6000 miles old. I know the LP is probably fried but is there anything else I'm missing. I don't want to spend $90 to have the dealer pass the flow test to have to spend $140+ to get a new LP.

Help

Thanks
Bill.

maybe an apps reset? if the truck seems that down on power maybe it has no idea you are pushin on the skinny pedle..., even with only 6 k on the filter maybe ya got one bad batch in there muckin things up. do you run additive? power service white bottle for anti gel and a 4 pt cetane boost, i just switched to a half a bottle per fillup & I did notice a hand calculated gain.

Ok I just went out and started the APPS reset but I didn't put the parking brake on before disconnecting the neg terminals. I'm going to assume that makes no difference it's just a safety thing?

Right?

terrible milage

Don't suppose it is but if nothing works it could be bad voltage. If you think that it is I can help futher. The APPS reset could be some of the problem for the initial lack of fueling and then the slow boost buildup.

My truck was like that until I put new injectors in the motor. Now it is back to the same old truck.

Right on the Parking Brake!

On the Apps reset... (if not to late) leave it set, with key on for min of 2 hrs... not the 1/2 hr minimum described in instructions.
If you already did it, and got some improvement...do it again for a longer period of time!

Did you or the dealer check for codes?
Got gauges? How's your boost level?

YES! I would not bother with anything else until the truck has been checked for DTC's. Or has it been checked already?

On a 2002 you should be able to do the key On-Off-On trick to get the codes from the on board computer.

As for the dead pedal...

It's going to be a VP44 problem or APPS sensor going south... But as a rule of thumb it's going to head towards VP44 problem... Most common...

But check for codes first...

Thanks everyone, no codes via the key method. APPS reset was for just over 2 hours. Maybe there is some more power today but I think that's wishful thinking. Only gauge so far is fuel pressure. Funny thing today is that whistle drone is back and it's not the turbo, this sounds like it's coming from the drivers side but I've checked and rechecked the intercooler boots. Must get a boost gauge but I'm broke.

Some are saying VP going south, what about just the LP? I am seeing more white smoke lately but it's cold in the morning on my way to work but no white smoke on the return trip home.

Any more ideas? I did just put in some cetain (sp?) boost injector cleaner forgot the brand now but the white bottle stuff.

Thanks again.

Bill.

Sounds like you've got a boost leak somewhere that you'll have to locate, you should be seeing black unburnt fuel with low boost. White smoke usually is a fueling problem with pump(or it's too cold still when you're driving it(not enough of a warmup). Check all the pressurized side, especially boots again for proper fitting and tightness, and for pinholes.

just to be on the safe side pull your air cleaner and make sure no critters crawled in and set up home sweet home, mice can do a lot of work in as little as one night.
