temporary loss of throttle???

I have had this happening for the last 6 months or so. Under steady medium spd(20-40 mph) the throttle will stop working & engine will drop back to idle but not die. After a few seconds(sometimes 2-5?) the throttle will come back but the engine light does come on. The truck does behave normally after that. The light stays on for about 3 or 4 engine cycles then goes out.

At the beginning it happened less but now is getting more frequent. Extended warrenty is up & do not want to pay $95 an hour to have dealership look at unless I have to. Took it to a local mechanic that did not have the time to figure it out that day & cleared the codes for me. Don't know where the code #'s are now.

Since the truck has been running fine after this happens it has not been a priority. However I WOULD like to get it takin care especially if it will keep me from being stranded &/or a large repair bill. THX

Exactly what happen to mine,I thought it would be Injector Pump............, It was the APPS. (TPS) Very Expensive from the dealer, Next time it happens see if you can get to an AutoZone (if Possible) They will read and clear the codes for free.. I think the dealer gets over $300.00 for them I think more like $400.00 I lucked out and found a used one on eBay for $52.00 Been workin great for 6 months now.. The good thing is I see you have a 5 Speed trans so you can use an Automatic Trans APPS or a Standard Trans APPS. If you can get a good used one. BUT you wont know if its good till you try it. In my photo gallery you can see the difference in the two APPS.

Good Luck ,,,

Could be one of two problems.... the aforementioned APPS has been known to cause those symptoms. So has a dying injection pump. The only way to really know is to scan the codes.

To really Know would be to Borrow a DRB from a Friend who works at a Dodge dealer,Go into the sensor screen to watch the percentage of TPS Or APPS opening as you SLOWLY push on the Go Pedal and watch the percentage of throttle opening,,Mine would Go to zero when it was supposed to read 17 percent, the code I had was,,, 0121 Accel pos sensor volts do not agree with idle valid signal.

This happened to Smokindog as well. He replaced the APPS and says the truck is back to normal. Maybe he will pop in. And not all the time will a VP44 drop codes, only if something electrical goes out in the pump. If something mechanical breaks no codes from the VP.

First, I would try the APPS Reset and see if that stopped it for awhile.

Look here for instructions.

Tiny is dually right. I just replaced my APPS yesterday morning and when my factory VP died it did not produce a code. At 159K it was a mechanical failure.

I had the same intermittent miss that you did and just used my Smarty to find the code. It was indeed a P0121 and I called my dealer buddy and got him to print and fax the system check process to me. List price is in the neighborhood of $445 and I was able to get it for exactly $300.27 The install is as simple and as straightforward as an oil change. All you need is a 10mm socket and a #2 Phillips screwdriver (stubby is best). The whole process including wiping my tools off and putting them away took about 20 minutes.

I looked for one on eBay last week and couldn't find one. There is one on there right now. Click here to see it. That looks like a pretty good price, but it appears to be for an HO and although it is new and will not likely fail anytime soon there is no factory warranty on it.

Bad injection pump, NO! say it ain't so! Hopefully it is a bad TPS & am in the process of acquireing one. Will see if that clears up my problems. If it is a bad IP it is my fault as I did not get my fp gauge soon enough.

Thanks for all the help & info from everyone here.

I've been having the same problem for a month or so now and only at speeds up to about 50 mph. Just took it on a 250 mile trip at speeds between 60 & 70 mph with no problems at all.
On two occasions, the problem has shown up right after starting the truck and putting it into drive. Push the pedal and nothing. After pumping the pedal about four or five times it finally smartens up. The check engine light has never come on so I don't imagine that any codes have ever been logged.
I'm going to first try the APPS reset procedure posted by crobtex.

You can try the APPS reset proceedure, but it probably won't make any difference. You should scan for codes just to be sure there isn't something else going on, otherwise you are pretty safe to assume it is the APPS. It is a dealer-only item as it includes the bell crank assembly. If you can't find a used one, try Transittown Dodge in New York state...that's where I got mine...25% off for online Mopar orders. Or, someone might chime in with somewhere else that might have a better deal. After you replace it, put a bead of RTV silicone around the assembly to keep water out of the sensor, and don't use high pressure water at the car wash to clean things off under the hood!

Update

I did win a used APPS on Ebay, THX for the link Truckman! It was $92 shipped & was out of a wrecked 99 CTD. Replaced last night & the truck fired right up. Drove today & seemed to be running great. Hopefully this fixed my problem but only time will tell. I'll let you know if it starts acting up again.

Now it is time to start bombing!
