anyone out there running synthetic transmission oil in automatics? and advantages to or not to running it? ???

 

I'm not gonna do an Amsoil commercial here but if you subscribe to the idea that synthetics have better heat distribution qualities, then yes, synthetic would be a good thing to put in your "heat-sensitive" tranny. If you look at the facts, that Dodge recommends synthetic in the rear if your "towing" or "doing a lot of towing", depending on which manual you read, you will see that even DC recognizes the superior qualities of synthetics over dino oil. I submit that even though we aren't talking about gear oil here, it makes sense to apply the same logic to the tranny.

And yes, I put Amsoil in my tranny, and everywhere else, rears, transfer case, engine, at 50K. I bought the truck with 47K on it.

have been using amsoil synthetic for about 1 1/2 yrs it lowered my trans temp atleast 25 deg when pulling my 5th wheel. had some shifting problems before I started using they are gone now. I don't know if that is what helped it or not but does well now.Getting ready to do DTT trans upgrade end of Feb.

 

I had a big block 98 Chev for towing my trailer and put synthetic in everything, after 65000 miles it was still a nice pink with no stink. This stuff was really amazing at -40+ as the truck would shift instantly into gear and have torque pressure when other vehicles would not move until they had generated heat in the pan. We use the same thing in the snowplow pumps. PK

 

I have just put amsoil in my Truck and I can't give you any good or bad about it. The one thing that sold me was the pourable down to -47. I like that, the fluid with be able to get moving much quicker into the tranny.<br><br>KC

 

I had put amsoil or mobil-1 synthetic in my 92 before I sold it. I also used a b&amp;m deep sump pan. I put these in place at 140,000 after the trans was rebuilt and at 300.000 miles it ran great. The deep pan has a drain plug so you can change fluid without dropping the entire pan. I will be installing a drain plug and switching to amsoil at my first fluid change with my 2002.

 

I use the Amsoil in mine, I think it runs a little cooler.

 

I run AMSOIL in my auto and transfer case. The local transmission guru highly recommended AMSOIL (he's not a dealer either) in these transmissions. He says it lubes the overdrive unit better and reduces heat.

 

I tow a 5th wheel camper frequently and run Mobil 1 in mine with a Trans-go shift kit. No problems at this time. However, I am going to install an Edge ez in the Spring and we will see what happens then.

 

Can anyone tell me if they notice a difference in shifting with amsoil or other synthetics? Do the shifts feel better, etc...?? Thanks!<br><br>Tony

When I switched to Amsoil in my tranny I did not notice any difference, in shifting or mileage, but as far as mileage, I run in the city mostly so I don't get very accurate mileage.<br><br>Chris

 

I live in Colorado. Sometime I run the truck &quot;empty&quot;, sometimes I pull a 35 5er. And I have 3 other trailers of assorted sizes. Between the varying loads, hills, mountains, &quot;winterized fuel&quot; and wind, it would be hard for me to tell if ANYTHING short of a miracle gave me better or worse mileage. But I run Amsoil in EVERYTHING. It makes me feel better! : <br><br>Amsoil dealer/user for over 20 years.

 

If you look at it from the perspective that heat and friction are a transmissions worst enemy, especially in the 47RE. If you can lower trans temp, reduce friction, esentially increasing trans life, the $100 fluid change is still better than the $1200 trans change. even if you can increase the life of the trans by 25% your still ahead of the game.
