Question Switch to Redline/AMS?

Ok, the truck has only 600 miles on it. I want to change the tranny and diff's to Redline synthetic (same weight/viscos) because I've had good experiences with that brand. This being the first new vehicle I've owned, I'm wondering about the break in period for the tranny and diff's. What kind of mileage would you guys recommend for switching the lube the first time. I don't want to have to replace it again anytime soon, so I'd like to let it break in so I can change it once to Redline and call it done. Any ideas on fluid quanity, or where I find out which diff's I have (Dana, etc)? I should point out that I have no intention of switching the engine to synthetic yet, just the diff's and 6 spd tranny.

The 5600's throw out a lot of metallic particles during the first few thousand miles they're run. Sensitive synchros, too. I'd change out the oil around 5000 miles, 20K miles, and then every 30K miles afterward. You can stick to the warranty oil, or use a better synthetic product like Redline MTL, at your discretion.

You should have American diffs/axles instead of Danas, which are in the 2nd generation CTD's. Actually, you ought to post this in the 3rd generation forum -- those guys could help you more.

You and I have the same vehicle, according to your post.
I changed everything out between 6800-7100 miles.

If you pm me I'll send you a spread sheet I've put together on MOPAR/AMSOIL/FLEETGUARD/TRUFLOW/REDLINE numbers, products with Quantities and costs (from on-line places)

May help...

The diffs are safe to change with less than 1K miles. The Redline gear oils are IMHO the best on the market.

The Redline MTL is the stuff to use in the 5600. DO NOT USE ENGINE OIL-- Amsoil or anyone else's. Those synchros need a little friction to operate, and the MTL is specifically designed for this application (manual transmissions that need a thinner lube)

I am a big believer in the Redline products being fantastic. The only real debate concerning them in my mind is whether or not they are worth the money, not whether or not they are great.

I would Redline the whole driveline, except perhaps the engine. That's the only area where I am not convinced of the RL cost effectiveness.

For the Record, I HAVE used the RL 15w-40 engine oil. It was fantastic-- 1.5 more mpg, 2psi more boost, engine was a LOT quieter.

But it's hard to argue ANY oil is worth $30 a gallon!!!! I now use Delo. I may go back to the Redline, even at the ridiculous price. I was really impressed with it, though I haven't a shred of UOA or any scientific "proof" that it's better-- just my experience and observations.

YMMV

Concur, I'm running MTL in the transmission and AMSOIL in everything else. I was just putting out the different part numbers I collected when making my decision on which synthetic to use where...

Hey Eagle driver,
Your diffs are AAM's which stands for American Axle Manufactoring, not sure about thelubes that the manufactor calls for, I use Amsoil in everything but the tranny, I use Redline MT-90 there. The latest issue of Four Wheeler mag has a really good comparison on the Dana axles and the AAM axles. Dodge went to using the AAM axles in the '03 model heavy duty trucks.

ok, thanks for that. The guy from redline said i would have to figure out if they were the 12 inch (??, i think) or the dana, so i guess since it's not the dana, by process of elimination.... I think I'll wait till about 2k miles before I switch everything (minus the engine) to full synthetic.

I would like to read the posts and recent warantee issues...
please provide a link

BTW food for thought - REDLINE 15w-40 Diesel Oil is not "CI" rated yet. I know I'm going to open a can of worms on that one....

did a quick search and couldnt find it it specifically dealt with someone warrantee claim and sythetic fill use in his transmission. I believe it even went to court and he was denied based an older TSB that chrysler has designating specific fluids for specific aplications...

No can here, since my 02 only requires CH-4. You 3rd gen guys might want to reconsider. I don't think I would use an oil not rated CI-4 in a 3rd gen.

That said, I think that RL just hasn't updated the specs yet to CI-4. I would be pretty surprised if it didn't already surpass those specs by quite a bit.
