Surging

Got an 01 and from time to time the truck surges. No load no loss of power. Have checked for codes and the only one was p0370. It was not a hard code and has not came back. When it surges it smokes like crazy. Any body have an idea. Thanks

When my truck started surging it was because the lp (lift pump) was going out. SO use a machanical gaue and check pressure of fuel. Dont know if that is even close to the solution but good spot to start.

Checked the pressure this weekend and 15 at idle and 10 wfo. Did not do it this weekend. The injection pump was replaced in Dec and the lift pump in June. No boxes, only muffler delete. Not sure where to go from here.

Here's another thread with attempted solutions on what looks to be the same issue. No "real" answer......yet

P0370 Fuel Injection Pump Speed/Position
Sensor Sig Lost
Problem caused by internal fuel injection pump failure.

Looks like it's a VP code....

Steam Guy,
You mentioned that the P0370 code was a single occurrence, but do you recall if that was prior to the injector pump swap? If so, was the code cleared after the injector pump swap?

No the code was about a month ago and the pump was replaced in Dec. The main time it does it is when the tank is at 1/8. But the tank still has 10 gal. The gauge is off. It did it once full but it was like a miss fire and it puffed puffed died, no surge and it started right back up and was fine.

Sounds like a lack of fuel. You might consider taking robins suggestion before your VP gets hurt.
