Strange Sound

Hi All;

New to this board and relatively new to CTD's. Had my 2001.5 for about a year now but put it up for the winter and just resumed driving it a few weeks ago. Had fuel stabilizer in it all winter and started it up & ran it up to 190* once a week. Idles fine, runs just like it did last fall but it seems like when I'm pulling a hill and working it a little, I get this pulsating noise from the engine. I don't know how to better describe it . The truck 's speed doesn't seem to pulsate along with the noise. Only noticable, like I said, when the engine is under load. Didn't get any codes by switching on the ignition 3 times. Just got a fuel pressure guage but not yet hooked up.
One more thing, how does one figure out when the 5 year warranty expires? Truck only has 56k on it. Any help appreciated and sorry I can't give a better description of the problem. Thanks.

Your warranty should still be good and I think it is 10 year 100k. It sounds like a fuel problem to me, take out any fuel box you might have and go to Dodge. If you have a fuel box you might try taking it out and see how it runs.

P.S. Welcome to the site.

you don't think it is your fan clutch kicking in.....
I was puzzled the first time I had mine kick in.
It was going up a long grade with a load and then this noise came ....then went away....then came on,......then went away.
I noticed it coincided with the temp gauge...then realized it was the fan clutch kicking in.

I would hook the fuel pressure guage up at take for a ride and test pressures. Warrenty on engine is 5yrs or 100K which ever first. Starts on the in service date.

Thanks for the replies.

The pulsations are about one second apart, I don't think it's the fan clutch. Will have to get the gauge hooked up and see what it says. How do I figure out what my in service date is? Thanks again.

Thats the day the truck was originally purchased and titled to the first owner. Also theres a TSB about the thermostat. Says that when pulling a grade and getting a thumping noise to change to a differant themostat. You can check on dieselram.org for all tsb's on truck. This should be a warrenty item if you are still under 100k.
