Stock fuel flow?

Does any body know the stock transfer pump pressure/ volume on a '98 24-valve. As well as a cheap upgrade. The reason I ask is because, I have heard the main reason the injection pump goes bad is from over heating (due to overheating from running "dry").
Also it seems as though my truck pulses while cruising, kinda like I'm pumping the peddle slightly (not with cruise on, but when cruise is set at 60 mph truck climbs to about 65-68 mph and takes about 2 or 3 minutes to get back down to speed) wondering if they may be a sign of a bad pump?

I like to see never under 6 PSI on the IP side of the fuel filter. Some (factory?) say over 14 causes starting problems. Mine is around 13 idling 6 or so WOT or I change the filter or pump as needed.

High performance pumps can keep it higher. I used the Cummins standard pump but was able to get the campaign pump at about $66 - no longer available I believe. The 6 minimum should keep you safe anyway.

Note that I also mounted my pump on the frame rail near the tank which increased the pressure from original along with reliability. It was a couple lbs lower before.

I know that I need a pressure gauge. However I just got married a few weeks ago and money is kinda tight...does anyone know of any cheap/quality gauge/pod set up? I was thinking of doing pyro., boost, f/p gauge set-set up. or if not an A-piller mounting then where else?

As previously mentioned, a fuel pressure gauge is highly recommended.

Your set speed while using the cruise control is wandering either because you have a vacuum leak, or the software is still the original version. A slowly climbing speed while the cruise control was engaged was a common problem with these trucks for your model year.

This TSB corrected the problematic performance.

The new PCM software improves the speed control system sensitivity so that the vehicle speed remains closer to its set speed with fewer engine rpm oscillations

Took me a while to write that last response, so I missed your reply.

Here is a pic I took in AUG of 2000 after I installed the gauge set-up. Westach gauges. The pod came from Geno's. Back then, choices for a pod and reliable gauges were not what they are today, so I had to make do with that add-on pod. After 8 years of service, everything works fine.

You have to be careful when selecting the pyro. Plenty of people have melted a piston by operating too close to the edge. What it boils down to is how well is the pyro senser reporting the actual temps. So you have to try to get the best set of gauges and sensors you can afford.

alright, thanks. the next question is whats a good brand of gauges? I have been told to install the pyro. after the turbo and just make sure that i add a couple hundred degrees since i will lose some heat through the turbo, then that way if it breaks it won't wipe out my turbo. I don't have any mods done to the truck yet, but currently I have a HyperTech MaxEnergy programer, but not installed due to the fact that I lost apx. 1.5 MPG on stage one, driving it easy. By the way, it's (programer) up for sale $375 obo

Put the pyro pre turbo. Guessing will cost you a piston. Its no more work to go pre turbo than post turbo. To me its easier to drill and tap the manifold that fiddle around with the pipe post turbo.

Pick your favorite brand for gauges. Both Isspro and DiPricol have great customer satisfaction rates.

I don't think I am allowed to suggest vendors as I am one. But look around, get the gauges you want and enjoy!
