Steering Box Problems
Steering Box Problems
Diesel Gods,
Has anyone had any problems with their steering box? ??? A buddy has a 2000 RAM CTD and has all kinds of problems with the steering. Apparently, only Dodge makes the parts to fix the issue. :
Just wondering if the 2002 has the same issues.
So far... so good. 8)

Re:Steering Box Problems
My buddy has a 98.5 that had a problem with the shaft being loose. His son works for Car Quest and was able to get the parts to rebuild a "different" housing. If it is leaking, you can get a seal kit. If there is a mechanical issue, I think you are stuck getting a new box or a decent core to rebuild.
Re:Steering Box Problems
I don't know what issues he is having, but have you/he looked at Darins steering stabilizer to help with play in the box and take some of the load off it? My steering shaft bushing/bearing had some play in it but was not leaking, I added the stabilizer this weekend and it has eliminated all the play associated with the loose shaft. I still have some play in the track bar but that will be taken care tonight.
Just a thought.

Re:Steering Box Problems
I think that AGR (?) makes a replacement steering box for our trucks. I think that there are other companies out there that might also. If you do a search on this site you might be able to find some more information on this.
Re:Steering Box Problems
I had one replaced under warrantee that was leaking and I got one now fresh out of warrantee that is starting to go out.
I am definately watching this thread!!!!

Re:Steering Box Problems
This seems to be a common problem, especially with the 4x4 crowd - the DSS steering stabilizer for $150 takes the strain off the gearbox, and should provide the extra margin of strength and reinforcement needed. Yeah, we COULD sit around and complain about a poor design I suppose - and "insist" or "force" DC to do something about it - but to me, it's pretty much like the similar lift pump problem - I'm well aware of the problem, and know how to fix it - and it's FAR less problem and stress to simply take care of it myself and get on with life than to go charging at windmills - life's too short to sweat the small stuff!

Re:Steering Box Problems
I have dual front stabilizer shocks... Is that what you are referring to as a help to the steering box? What is the DSS stabilizer shock does it mount differently than standard or aftermarket stabilizer shocks?

The DSS stabilizer is a brace that runs from the frame rail on each side of the truck and secures with the bolts holding the swaybar bracket to the frame - at the main steering shaft, there is a shaft extending attachment that threads onto the shaft after removing the stock nut that holds the pitman arm in place, and extends that shaft a couple of inches. an industrial grade bearing (greasable!) - with the appropriate mounting hardware - attaches and secures to the newly extended steering gear shaft. This allows the added DSS brace to take up most of the lateral force that was formerly done by the steering gear alone. The DSS is an extremely well designed and engineered piece, and easily installed in most cases in less tah 30 minutes. My truck is relatively new, so no problems with the stock steering - but the DSS is one of those items so obviously needed and beneficial, it just made sense too install it BEFORE problems showed up, as it obviously has for so many...

Re:Steering Box Problems
I had same problem with my steering bushings worn out in second steering box decided to try Darrins bracket. Now truck steers like it has rack and pinion steering no play or dreaded wander that I have had since new. Great with camper behind truck. Highly recommend bracket. I don't work or have any affilation with Darrin's company.

Re:Steering Box Problems
Stateside customers will get LOTS faster service by ordering from Piers - he has them in stock, and ships from facilities in the US - ordering direct from Darrin in Canada can take a month or more for delivery - mine from Piers was here and installed in less than a week...
