Starting out in 2nd gear

Posting this for a family member who is non internet savvy. He has the same truck I do. He has put in a new transmission and a new APPS. The problem is occasionally after running for awhile when he turns the truck off then turns it back on later he starts out in 2nd or 3rd gear (not sure which). He turns the truck off, then restarts it and it's fixed.

We've reset the APPS and it still does it, so far that's as far as the troubleshooting has gone. Anyone else seen this issue and located the problem before?

The APPS will have little or nothing to do with starting in 2nd or 3rd. Question? When it starts off in 2nd gear, will it downshift to 1st if manually placed in low gear? Assuming it will, the most likely issue is governor pressure transducer and or governor pressure solenoid on valve body. It is generally recomended to replace both and be done with it, as difficult to figue which is messing up. The other alternative is replace valve body with upgraded performance one for a few dollars more.

Yeah that occurred to me but he just had the entire transmission replaced which included the sensors, not that they can't still be bad of course.

Shouldn't it still be under warranty then?

I had a problem similar to what you are describing. My truck would only start in 2nd all the time. It ended up being the gov. pressure solenoid and transducer. Its located on the valve body in the transmission.

No, he replaced the tranny out of his own pocket, it's way out of warranty right now.

Thanks for the replies guys, it's hard to believe the new sensor is malfunctioning but the problem does tend to point that way.

In 2000 the part # changed on transducer and wiring harness changed. Perhaps the builder intalled wrong harness.
