Is this normal?
Yours look just like mine. Changed em last Saturday and they work great. Larryb's sent me the kit (contacts & plunger) for about 35 bucks.

What I just noticed that's sort of interesting is that starter contact replacement threads have just started to show up in the 24 valve forum, been common in 12 valve for a few years. LarryB is common name in 12 valve. This indicates to me that the overvalveds are just now coming into the problem due to higher miles. Much better to replace the contacts before they mess up, around 80-100k.

Premature wear was probably caused by the owl.

the single battery starters go out first. Lower battery voltage means more amperage on starting. Easy way to take out a starter is weak batteries.

i bought 2 pair of the contacts from local starter rebuilder for $5.00. he has the plunger for another $5.00....shouldn't pay those high ebay or foster truck prices...the contacts cost 42 cents and the plunger is $4.50 wholesale.

They do tend to start easier with both positive and negative connected. On the other hand look at all the work you saved
