Squeeze Tube Gasket

Ok, going to change the rear end lube, do I use Permatex black, blue, or red. Do I apply to the cover and put it on right away, let it skin over, put it on snug right away but not finish tighten down for 24 hours?

I am also wondering what lube to use, not synthetic.
Thanks

I use Loctite 515, availible at most auto parts stores. Just apply it to clean surfaces, tighten up, fill up and drive away.

Any good quality High-Temp RTV silicone will work fine. Let it set up 15-20 minutes then tighten it up, not too tight, about 20 ft lbs is fine. Also after you do that, run your finger along the outside edge where the cover meets the housing. And why would you not want to use synthetic oil in it?? Even Dodge recommends synthetic if you plan to tow anything heavy.

The Right Stuff. Silicone Gasket maker, just like the factoies use. I have been using it for about two years in any application that does not require an anaerobic sealer. Haven't had it leak yet, and it is very versatile. Also does not seem to be affected by freeze / thaw cycles when it is still in the tube, unlike most RTV silicone products.

as stated above, really any color will work, but Gray or Black are generally used for oil sealing...

Ok, synthetic it is, even if I don't tow anything heavy. What brand do you guys use and are there brands that include anti chatter.

Now you've done it. You asked the dreaded what grease do you recomend for the rear axle question....

Anti chatter built in the lube or added varies by rearend. I run Amsoil which has the anti-chatter built in but I still had to add more, matter of fact I need to add more. Ironically, even Amsoil now sells Anit-chatter additive for their lubes.

Oh man, didn't want to open that can of worms. My new solution is to not change it.

My Favorite RTV is the Copper. Then Blue, then black. Not by functionality, just by the pretty colors

Seriously, the Right Stuff is fantastic. When I changed the rear diff lube, I put the RTV on then put the cover on-- no setup time. It's probably best to let it skin over a least a bit or setup entirely.

Just go with a good brand of gear lube...

As for the pumpkin cover... Just grab some silcon and do it up... Don't even have to wait slap it on and load it up with lube.

As for me...

I'm using 85W-90 Phillips 66 Gear Lube (5 Gallon Bucket) and a tube of clear silcon... So far so good...

Yeah I heard all the stories on lube... I listened... But this has done good with me. I would rather change it more often myself it just keeps the dirt and water out of it.

Remember! Manual Transmissions, Transfer Cases, and Front / Rear Axles DON'T HAVE A FILTERS! As soon as the lube gets dark or dirty it is getting dumped!
